The Western mind simply cannot comprehend the fact that with an internal market and talent pool as large as China, it's a statistical inevitability that China will catch up with and eventually surpass the West.
When it does, I'm sure there will be the inevitable hand wringing and looking for someone or something to blame as if it must be that China must have copied/stolen/cheated in some way as they cannot comprehend losing in actual direct "fair" competition.
This kind of attitude goes back all the way for centuries to things like people's disbelieving reactions to Marco Polo's writings. The initial reaction will be disbelief and contention that somehow the numbers or accounts must be faked, paid shills, etc... When the evidence becomes too widespread and impossible to dismiss, then the hunt for a scapegoat will begin or the accusations "cheating".
