There are also more Chinese-Australian MPs in the new parliament. Sally Sitou, Gabriel Ng, Sam Lim, etc. Shit maybe I should join the ALP as well. At least us wumaos in Australia won't be going camping anytime soon.

When Labor announced that Penny Wong was going to be foreign minister, I was concerned, given that much of Australian "foreign policy" involves posturing about China, and the Labor party's positioning on that subject, that her appointment would bring out some ugly racist sentiments about her Chinese heritage, questioning her loyalties, etc. Thankfully, that doesn't seem to have happened. Even the One Nation crowd seems to have left that angle alone. It helps that she is by all accounts very good at her job, and an excellent public speaker who chalks up wins with every interview.

Penny Wong got all the politically correct buff possible. Let's see:

- She's a woman
- She's half-Asian (Malaysian Chinese from her father, English from her mother)
- She's a lesbian (came out in 2002, married her wife in 2024)
- She's a Christian (attends Uniting Church)

She's just Chinese enough and just white enough to not upset anyone, really.

Penny is not mainland Chinese. She's born in Malaysia. There's difference. Not all Malaysian Chinese align to China (CCP) too. Some are actually very anti CCP and siding Taiwan (DPP).

Heritage aside, Penny Wong is of the Labor Left. Of course, being Labor Left doesn't really mean much these days (see their continued support for Israeli genocide in Gaza), but speaking *very* broadly at least she shouldn't be as rabidly anti-CPC as most other politicians from Western countries.
