I'm 50/50 on it being a bioweapon gone wrong or an initial failed attack followed by Chinese counter-strike.
My guess is, considering their unnaturally firm belief in herd immunity throughout, is their plan was to have a harmless variant spread across their own population first, then deploy a deadly variant in China. The emergence of deadly variant in US and UK could be natural mutation or it could be counterstrike. Halon's razor would say it's natural mutation, but viral mutation into more deadly variants is also unusual.
If it was an engineered bioweapon, it was pretty crap. The death rate of COVID settled at not much higher than a strong influenza outbreak.
That depends on what the objective the bioweapon was supposed to achieve, if it was economic disruption, turning public opinion and an attack on credibility, than it did its job. If the death rate was extreme it would have constituted an act of war and a war crime, the consequences of which would have been way more far reaching.
I guess you is right, it it had been a strain of airborne rabies, that would have been extreme.
It settled at strong influenza after killing probably 10 million people and that's with US and European population density

And NO, the US can cut all the regulations they want and it will still be more expensive to make a barbie doll in the US than in China. Goes beyond labor cost. And to that cost need be added the imports taxes of the raw materials to build the damn barbie doll.
On his own stooge words, people in the US will now have to pay triple the price for a Made In the US badly built lead tainted barbie doll, because the Trump tariffs and Trump regulatory cuts.
