No one in the Chinese government should be fooled or satisfied with returning to the status quo. American politicians talk a big game and when they dial it back you know there's blood in the water. Since China already played the minerals card, might as well see it to the end and twist the knife. De-escalating will only allow America to regroup and come back more prepared.

Yea, basically US has done this during peacetime (a gift to China). Imagine during Taiwan Armed Reunification, the US would coordinate with EU and other allies for virtual embargo on China. Now, US has blundered into a 1 vs. 195 nation trade war, you can't get better positioning than now to divide-and-conquer US allies against US and pull the world to your side. China has invoked the rare earth card, there is no going back to status quo.

There's a story I heard some time back about a Chinese negotiation with the Australian government before this one (don't quote me on it). The Australian negotiator said his counterpart came with a large notebook and just started reading from it. When he interrupted, the Chinese negotiator just flipped the notebook back to the beginning and starting reading again. He did this every time he was interrupted or asked a question.

This could be apocryphal but it gets the point across. This is exactly how China should handle negotiations with America. They start at the lowest levels and China better like what it hears. If not, or if higher level dialogues are requested before China grants them, the negotiations start all the way back down at the lowest level. Just like the negotiator with the notebook. Again, and again, and again.

Not apocryphal, and it's Canada, not Australia, during the Meng Wanzhou saga.

The silver-haired executive smiled at a pair of Foreign Ministry officials when he and the adviser entered the meeting room. An elderly Communist Party official began reading from a stack of pages, pausing with dramatic effect for the translator to catch up.

“You have arrested Madam Meng.”

“You are lapdogs of the United States.”

Mr. Barton interrupted, and the ministry official, appointed by Mr. Xi, looked up and flipped back to the first page. Then he began rereading from the beginning. For three hours, the official read from an invective-laced script, circling back to the top each time Mr. Barton protested.

Calling for a timeout, Mr. Barton stepped into the hallway. “I think we’re in the 5%,” the adviser said, acknowledging the worse-than-expected outcome.

I agree.

I used to not think that China had a definitive timeline for Taiwanese reunification. The way China has handled this trade war changed my mind. Total decoupling is already in progress, and when it's 80-90% complete, armed unification will be triggered somehow. There's a clock counting down somewhere in Zhongnanhai.

From the other thread, it's not actually a trade deal. They have agreed to a vague outline.
This is truly the worst of politics...
We are talking about talking. Let's create a lot of pomp and ceremony over it!
Bingo... it's like they're announcing the upcoming announcement of the planning to work on the timing to start working on the details of a trade deal, should there's a need to actually work on one in the future.
