ECOWAS estimates 25,000 troops for potential invasion of Niger

French broadcaster RFI citing a Nigerian official: Nigeria can provide more than half of the 25,000 troops for the invasion of Niger if necessary

The West African bloc ECOWAS said it has the capacity to provide up to 25,000 troops for the potential invasion of Niger with the goal of reinstating Nigerean President Mohamed Bazoum, Nigerean-based RFI radio station reported.

The majority of forces will be deployed by Nigeria, the report added.

The crisis in Niger was sparked on July 26, when the presidential guard detained President Bazoum, leading to the subsequent declaration of interim leadership by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, who also assumed the presidency of the Caretaker National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.

Are they seriously going to consider invading Niger with 25,000 soldiers? 25 million population with a landmass that is slightly 2x larger than Ukraine.

“The EU restrictions on export of high-tech products to China in recent years directly limited the EU’s ability to tap the potential of export to China and led to unbalanced trade,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Tuesday. The surplus “is a natural result under the combined influence of different industrial structures, industrial specialization, ways of trade and external factors.”
EU: We'll just import less from you then! Ban Chinese products!

EU: Hey why is there so much inflation?

Interestingly, the distance between ECOWAS Benin border to Niger's capital (Niamey) is similar (130KM) to the distance between Belarus border to Ukraine's capital (Kiev).

So if they try an Russian-style blitz to decapitate the capital and hope they sue for peace, they surely need more than 25,000 troops occupy Niamey capital, which itself has 1 million population.

Just as I thought, they are probably concerned with domestic stability regarding various rebel and potential rebel forces and ethnic groups. They are way less stable internally than Russia, so they can employ even fewer forces in % per se. Niger should be fine then.

So we went ahead of asians being not humane to being subhuman in less than a week. Alright. For context purposes, they said Russians are asians therefore asians and Russians are less humane in a nutshell summary.
Dear fascistoids,

You claim Asians are subhuman, yet way more of your lives are being lost than Asian ones because your tactics and equipment are garbage. Doesn't that make you the real subhuman?

Sincerely,
Turning Point Xi

This is bullshitting by MoFA. The EU's large and growing deficit in its trade with China is due to the slow but persistent degradation of its technological advantage as China has gradually moved up the value chain, and the faliure of the bloc's governments to counteract this by doing things like subsidizing RnD and providing preferential finance to businesses that deliver technological improvements. The fall in semi equipment exports makes only a vanishingly small contribution when compared to this.

The Lebanese army has mobilized its naval forces in response to Israeli boats that violated Lebanese sovereignty, Al-Mayadeen reported on 8 August.

Al-Mayadeen observed the Israeli boats entering Lebanon’s territorial waters via a camera located in the Naqoura area.

The Lebanese army was escorting a tour of dozens of journalists to the southern borders.

Israeli naval gunships similarly violated Lebanon’s sovereignty by entering 330 meters into its territorial waters off the coast of Naqoura in October 2022, just as Lebanon and Israel had reached an agreement to demarcate the maritime border between the two countries. The Israeli warship stayed in Lebanese waters for 10 minutes before turning back.

An agreement on a maritime border became a priority for both countries last year following the discovery of offshore natural gas fields in the area.

The most recent violation of Lebanese sovereignty comes amid continued tensions along the land border between Israel and Lebanon, which is still disputed.

The dispute revolves around the Shebaa Farms, an area of the Syrian Golan Heights occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War and that is situated alongside the Lebanon border.

Israel then invaded and occupied southern Lebanon in 1978, before Hezbollah forced Israel to withdraw in 2000. However, Israel retained control of the Shebaa Farms, which is claimed by Lebanon.

The ceasefire line following the 2000 Israeli withdrawal, known as the “Blue Line,” has served as the de facto border since that time and is patrolled by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The town of Ghajar sits atop the Blue Line, and Israel captured the area of the town on the Lebanese side during its war with Hezbollah in 2006.

Recently, Israel has been building a wall around the town amid speculation it will annex it.

In response, Hezbollah erected two tents on the Israeli side of the Blue Line on 21 June. The Hezbollah-affiliated newspaper Al-Akhbar warned that “any Israeli action to remove the tents will lead to war.”

Israel then filed a complaint with the UN in June, claiming that Hezbollah had set up tents inside of Israeli territory.

Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said on 8 August in a message addressed to both Hezbollah and the Lebanese government, that Tel Aviv is prepared to strike “every meter” of the country.

"Do not make a mistake, we do not want war, but we are ready to defend our citizens, our soldiers, and our sovereignty," the minister said.

"We will not hesitate to employ all of our power and to attack every meter of Hezbollah and of Lebanon … and return Lebanon to the stone age," he added.

Gallant said that Hezbollah “might mistakenly think that they can test Israel” due to the deep internal crisis it is facing, and the vow made by many of its army reservists to boycott military service protests against the government’s judicial reform program.

He affirmed, however, that Israel would not be divided in the event that Hezbollah threatened it with war.

Gallant’s threats came just hours after the Lebanese army mobilized its naval forces in response to Israeli boats that violated Lebanese sovereignty on 8 August.
