Let's get real here; no country can successfully fight an insurgency with pure conventional military means, not the US or China. Nigeria, outside of propaganda, has done well militarily to confine boko haram to the edges of the north east otherwise a significant chunk of the country would have been gone. There's no "embarrassment" there. The Nigerian military, even at its weakest, in an operation led by General Maxwell Khobe overthrew Sierra Leone's junta in 1998 and restored the president of that country. Today, there's a street named after him in Freetown. Its military also held rebels in Liberia when they were close to overrunning the capital, Monrovia, in September 1992. Ask any Liberian what they think of the Nigerian soldiers. From the Glover's Hausas to the Nigerian contingent that made up the Royal West African Frontier Force in WWII to its officers that served well and commanded peacekeeping operations in the Congo in the 1960s Nigeria has, by African standards, created a fine martial tradition. Nigeria deserves lots of criticism but its military isn't one of them.
In a military fight between Nigeria and Niger? If you go to Niamey they would laugh and tell you they have no chance. There's a reason why they are contacting Wagner and appealing to its population to defend the country. I know people want to take sides and denigrate the other but let's be realistic in our assessment.
