During 1979, one key advantage was that China knew the Vietnamese forces inside and out. Because they trained them during the America-Vietnam war.
Also Vietnam didn't commit it best troops and opted for conscripts, correctly believing that China wouldn't want to fight a long insurgency battle. But such a strategy meant that the inexperienced troops paid the price in lives and large parts of the north was deindustrialized during the temporary occupation.
Well, China also didn't send the best troops. The best troops was stationed in the north in the fear of USSR invasion
