Google does have some R&D in China, but most Google employees in China are marketing related, i.e. selling to Chinese advertisers. Source: Many friends and close relatives who work or worked at Google, including some in Google China offices.

Japan has a whole section of books with titles such as China's collapse and when would China collapse and China would break up into 14 pieces. Those books popped up 15 to 20 years ago and were written either by Taiwanese or Chinese that moved to Japan.

Why those books become so popular? Because they can't understand why China didn't crash like Soviet or why China development has leapfrogged Japan. In order to justify their superiority, many Japanese blindly bought into these China collapse theories. So these books become popular and publishers love them because these books don't need too much advertisement and have stable audience.
