The Biden administration is lobbying Democratic senators to put the brakes on a bill that would alter US policy toward Taiwan, including by designating it as a major non-NATO ally, according to people familiar with the matter.

The legislation also would provide Taiwan with $4.5 billion in security aid and support its participation in international organizations. It is sponsored by Foreign Relations Chair Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, and Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, both harsh critics of China, which considers the self-governing island of Taiwan as part of its territory.

Given China's massive purchasing power for commodities, I'm surprised they haven't started demanding producers from "unfriendly" countries accept Renminbi for purchases of coal/iron ore/bauxite/etc. Heck, they don't even need to demand, just offer a 0.1% premium(relative to local currency) for CNY payments or demand a 0.1% discount for USD ....
China has huge pile of USD, China has to spend them somewhere. Only when that pile is significantly reduce would China begin to demand RMB payment.

Jiang ZeMing made the right decision.
In addition to that, it is a basic decision that every Chinese ruler has made in the past.

Northern Wei, Northern Zhou, Tang and Later Zhou all crashed Buddhism when it became too influential and possessing too much properties.

Ming eventually banned Catholics when they refused to acknowledge that the emperor is above the pop.

Ming and Qing crashed Bailian and Tiandihui.

In Chinese political tradition there is no room for any powerful institution/society parallel to the secular government. This is as fundamental as "Democrazy" to the west.
