If I was Russia, I would not allow Ukraine's EU membership. Allowing that would wipe out whatever Russia did in the past years and will garantee a NATO expansion in a few years, just like what was promised about other NATO expansions.

I think the relationship between NATO and EU is more akin to symbiosis in shape. What you described cannot be possible due to the US presence in NATO, hence why there has been a continuous call for EU army amongst the European elites.

If you ask me the EU was needed to give the American empire a cultural and diplomatic good cop. The more softer face off empire while America could be the master, the hard first and bad cop. How much EU struggles it will always fall on its knees when America really wants its if its not this year then it will happen next year.

Vladimir Putin has already said he is against Ukraine joining the EU. He is in general against the former Soviet space joining any organization which specifically excludes Russia. At one point he floated the idea of Russia joining NATO and the EU and he was rebuffed on both counts. If Ukraine joined the EU it would make trade between Ukraine and Russia more difficult.
