The biggest competitor to South Korea shipbuilding industry is Chinese one; the biggest customers for South Korea LNG ships, a sector that SK currently dominates, are European, who take 50% of the market for such ships. This merger has significant implication for LNG ships.
Correct.

It’s far worse than mere greed.

The primary reason the UK and US went full-retard and immediately went to herd immunity after Italy went into lockdown was because they saw the dead from Italy were overwhelmingly elderly and saw covid as the perfect solution to their pensions black holes.

It’s only after the young started dying like flies that they reversed course.
I had that idea for a while in my head and I wouldn't be surprised if in 5 years you will articles be written that while the west sacrificed a lot at least the pensions problem was solved.

S.Korea taking a big L here.
This merger would have allowed it to pool resources and to better fight Chinese competitors

Xi should call the EU Commission and thank them for doing such a valuable service to the Chinese nation

I don't think much of this relationship. It is mostly due to the price setting of ships therefor transportation cost. It is a serious concern of any country who export or import LNG but does not build such ships. Europe is not alone in concerning, the approval of Singapore was not smooth except they approved eventually. If the Korean-Russian JV had impact on Europe's decision, their alternative for ships is China who has an even better relationship with Russia. Punishing South Korea doesn't seem to help Europe anything.

UK supplies weapons to Ukraine amid fears of Russian invasion

  • The first British anti-tank systems have already been delivered, as Kyiv asks the West for arms to help it protect itself
  • US lawmakers have also promised weapons and solidarity in a warning to Putin
Britain said on Monday it was supplying Ukraine with anti-tank weapons to help it defend itself from a potential invasion, during a stand-off with Russia which has massed troops near the Ukrainian border.

Western countries say they fear Russia is preparing a pretext for a new assault on Ukraine, which it invaded in 2014.

Moscow denies any plans for an attack, but has said it could take unspecified military action unless the West agrees to a list of demands, including banning Ukraine from ever joining Nato.
Talks last week ended with no breakthrough. Kyiv has asked Western countries for arms to help it protect itself.

“We have taken the decision to supply Ukraine with light anti-armour defensive weapon systems,” British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told parliament, saying the first systems were already delivered on Monday and a small number of British personnel would provide training for a short period of time.

He did not specify the number or type of weapons that were being sent, but said: “They are not strategic weapons and pose no threat to Russia. They are to use in self-defence.”

“These are short-range … but nevertheless it would make people pause and think what they were doing and if tanks were to roll into Ukraine, invade it, then they would be part of the defence mechanism.”

Wallace said he had invited Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to visit London in the next few weeks to discuss the crisis, though he did not know whether the Russians would accept.

“The current gap is wide but not unbridgeable. I still remain hopefully that diplomacy will prevail. It is President (Vladimir) Putin’s choice,” Wallace said.

A bipartisan group of United States senators also promised solidarity and weapons on a visit to Kyiv on Monday while warning the Kremlin against launching a new military offensive against Ukraine.

The United States has been Ukraine’s most powerful backer in its stand-off with Moscow after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the outbreak of the war in eastern Ukraine.

“I think

has made the biggest mistake of his career in underestimating how courageously the people of Ukraine will fight him if he invades,” Senator Richard Blumenthal told reporters.

“And we will impose crippling economic sanctions, but more important we will give the people of Ukraine the arms, lethal arms they need to defend their lives and livelihoods,” he said after the delegation met President Volodymyr Zelensky. These weapons could include Javelin anti-tank missiles, Stinger missiles, small arms and boats, he said.

“And so our message is: there will be consequences if he chooses to violate the sanctity of this democracy,” Senator Amy Klobuchar added.

Mergers: Commission prohibits proposed acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering by Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings

What the ... ... ?

:p

Kind of makes sense.

That Korean company is prevented from taking over that Asian company, so not to become bigger and achieve economies of scale.

Guess being members of that OCED club has it advantages.

You get to listen to the EU. Awesome!

:oops::D
