Washington: The US will immediately begin the process to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, secretary of state Rex Tillerson has said, after President Donald Trump recognized the holy city as Israel’s capital.

In a major announcement, Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on Wednesday despite warnings from the Arab leaders, reversing decades of US and international policy on the holy city. “The state department will immediately begin the process to implement this decision by starting the preparations to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” Tillerson said. President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital aligns the US presence with the reality that Jerusalem is home to Israel’s legislature, Supreme Court, president’s office, and prime minister’s office, Tillerson said in a statement.

“We have consulted with many friends, partners, and allies in advance of the president making his decision. We firmly believe there is an opportunity for a lasting peace,” he said. Tillerson said the safety of Americans was the state department’s highest priority, and with other federal agencies, it has implemented robust security plans to protect its citizens in affected regions.

In his landmark announcement, Trump said that, consistent with the Jerusalem Embassy Act, he was directing the state department to begin preparation to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “This will immediately begin the process of hiring architects, engineers and planners, so that a new embassy, when completed, will be a magnificent tribute to peace,” he said.

The controversial decision received mixed reactions. “I have long believed that Jerusalem is the true capital of Israel. However, issues surrounding the final and permanent status of Jerusalem must ultimately be resolved by Israelis and Palestinians as part of an internationally supported peace process,” Senator John McCain said. “That is why today’s policy announcement, as well as any future relocation of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, should be part of a comprehensive diplomatic strategy in coordination with regional partners to achieve peace and security between Israelis and Palestinians,” he said.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the reaction from across the world is “troubling”, including from important allies of Israel, and asserted that the announcement could have “destabilizing consequences” for a region already rife with tensions. “I am worried about the impact of this decision on the safety of US personnel overseas and have raised my concerns with the state department to ensure sufficient security measures are in place at all US embassies and consulates,” he said.

Another Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi, rued that in the absence of a negotiated settlement between Israel and the Palestinians, moving the US embassy to Jerusalem now may “needlessly spark mass protests, fuel tensions, and make it more difficult to reach a durable peace”.

Senator Marco Rubio said, “Today’s announcement is an important step in the right direction. Unequivocal recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital will be complete when the US embassy is officially relocated there”. Following the Trump’s decision, many Arab leaders warned that it could trigger an upheaval in already volatile West Asia. PTI

US vetoes UNSC resolution rejecting Trump's al-Quds decision

Mon Dec 18, 2017 07:05PM

The United States has been further isolated after it vetoed a UN Security Council’s resolution calling for the annulment of US President Donald Trump’s controversial bid to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital.

Fourteen members of the 15-member council voted on Monday in favor of the Egyptian-drafted resolution, which did not specifically name the US or Trump but expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem” al-Quds, while US Ambassador Nikki Haley wielded Washington’s veto against the call.

“What we witnessed here in the Security Council is an insult. It won’t be forgotten. We do it [the veto] with no joy, but we do it with no reluctance,” said Haley after casting the US veto.

“The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America’s role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council,” She further said after the vote.

Washington’s key allies the UK, Italy, France, Ukraine and Japan were all among the 14 countries that voted in favor of the measure, which asserted that “any decisions and actions, which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem [al-Quds] have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”

Palestinians slam US veto of UN resolution on Jerusalem al-Quds

In a statement released shortly after the UNSC vote, the Palestinian government strongly denounced as “unacceptable” the American veto, saying the highly provocative move “threatens the stability of the international community because it disrespects it.”

Speaking to reporters, Nabil Abu Rudeina, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said the US veto of the UN resolution was "unacceptable and threatens the stability of the international community, because it disrespects it."

Abu Rudeina said the support for the resolution, which included US allies France, Italy and Japan, "showed the (American) isolation,” adding, “The international community must work now to protect the Palestinian people."

On December 6, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital and relocate the US embassy in occupied lands from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

The dramatic shift in Washington’s policy vis-à-vis the city triggered demonstrations in the occupied Palestinian territories, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco and other Muslim countries.

On December 10, violent clashes erupted outside the US embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut during a protest against the US decision. Demonstrators burnt tires as well as the US and Israeli flags as they pushed to break through a barbed wire erected by security forces around the embassy complex. Security forces used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the angry protesters.

Jerusalem al-Quds remains at the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Palestinians hoping that the eastern part of the city would eventually serve as the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.

What's the backstory behind Trump's sudden motive to recognized Jeruselem from Tel Aviv?

This is a childish play IMHO but with real consequences. If the Trump admin had intended to play the long game, they should've worked the backchannels first and gather allies and forces to their side instead of what appears to be an outright knee jerk statement that have caused dissension all over the world and put embassy staff and US military personnel at unnecessary risk.

Unfortunately, once you lay out such an explosive statement, you can't really roll it back and have to essentially double down on it which appears to be what this veto on the annulment is.

What Nikki Haley said makes absolutely ZERO sense. In fact it is quite counterfactual.

“The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America’s role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council,” She further said after the vote.

The US gov. by herself suddenly recognizing Jeruselam out of the blue does NOT make the peace process easier. It makes it 1000X harder!

When you have everyone going against you including long time allies and NATO nations, it's time for a double check and it's time to reflect. Alas!, it also highlights the continued declination of US influence on the world political scene and this dog and pony show further erodes it.

What Nikki Haley said doesn't have to make sense but it's provocative... Lol I had to put that in there.
She got the IQ of a walnut, and that's insulting to walnuts.

I don't see how a city in the ME affect american sovereignty. Must be the whole "how did our oil get under their sand" thing again.
