Look this is severely pissing me off.
Xi Jinping issued a directive to produce more sci fi dramas and movies two years ago but it's not bearing fruit.
Why are we letting the Koreans produce a massive string of world topping science fiction TV shows?
Why are Japanese and Chinese incapable of producing live action sci fi? (Excl Godzilla)
Oh but is it just me but does Bae Doona look like Rinko Kikuchi? Plus they have the same haircut
If you don't like Korean shows, just don't watch them. No need to get worked up over it.
Also, China's Chasing Light Production is building a cinematic universe based on Chinese mythology. So far, they have White Snake, Nezha Reborn, and White Snake 2, and they're all top notch animations that are pushing the limits of convention. These are definitely not cartoons for kids.
Just because good Chinese cinema aren't making a splash in the Anglosphere doesn't mean they don't exist.
Now the thing you have to remember is that China is a huge movie market. Korea is an insignificant market next to China. This means that if Korean filmmakers want to make money, they need to target it toward either the Chinese market or the Western market. Indeed, we have seen them do both, and you might notice that successful Korean films contain very little Korean culture.
In contrast, since China is a huge market, Chinese filmmakers are much more motivated to make their movies appeal to the Chinese audience. As such, those movies are not so easily digested by non-Confucian cultures.
The best example of this is Crouching Tiger vs Hero. The former is a tale of revenge and forbidden love, both classic Shakespearean themes. The latter, on the other hand, is a cautionary tale of individual heroism vs the greater good. That is something Western audiences have a very difficult time accepting.
