Now do you still think that mainland China did it as a political stunt?
Well obviously NZ is only doing this because of pressure from China. I mean China is the real superpower of the world, controlling everyone form the WHO to the WWF. Hell, even aliens are doing Beijing’s bidding and sending their UFOs to spy on America for China!

MODERN DAY SLAVE LABOR

Many American industries and products are made using the modern day slave labor, i.e. the prisoners. As of June 2020, the United States had the highest number of incarcerated individuals worldwide, with more than 2.12 million people in prison, and they are used as the cheap labors!

The War on Drugs and harsher sentencing policies, including mandatory minimum sentences, fueled a rapid expansion in the nation’s prison population beginning in the 1980s (under the Ronald Reagan administration, 1981-1989 -- Nancy Reagan was a staunch advocate of the War on Drugs, and the Black people make up the largest percentage of the prisoners). The resulting burden on the public sector led to the modern emergence of for-profit private prisons in many states and at the federal level.

The United States has the world’s largest private prison population. Of the 1.5 million people in state and federal prisons in 2016, 8.5 percent, or 128,063, were incarcerated in private prisons. Another 26,249 people -73 percent of all people in immigration detention- were confined in privately-run facilities on a daily basis during fiscal year 2017. The federal government and 27 states utilized private prisons operated by for-profit and non-profit entities during 2016.

African Americans and whites use drugs at similar rates, but the imprisonment rate of African Americans for drug charges is almost 6 times that of whites.

Just like we still use archaic terms like "horsepower" even to measure power of an self driving electric car... in Peak Oil parlance there is this notion of "energy slaves"... basically the equilavent amount of hypothetical slaves one would need to amass to support a modern lifestyle but without the cheap abundant dense energy like oil etc... by some calculations the average America has 80 energy slaves, whilsts upper middle class has hundreds of energy slaves, and CEO and top 1% have thousands or tens of thousands of slaves... and Bezos had a whole planet

Globally energy production peaked in around 2018 or 2019... its all downhill from here...

The US prison system will continue to explode, in fact I predict all of America will transition to an open air prison... prison nation.... where you have to pay for the privilege of the government monitoring and controlling you... where you will own nothing, have no privacy, be able to go nowhere, and you will be happy for it...

Consider for a second a gallon of gas has same amount of energy as two to six weeks worth of human muscle labor and that right now you can sack groceries at minimum wage of $7.25 and within an hour afford more than that gallon of gas

When cheap energy is gone so goes the inflated lifestyle that it propped up

More than 90 countries expressed their support and understanding to China's stance and 65 of them clearly opposed interference with China's domestic affairs on its Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Tibet Autonomous Region under the excuse of human rights.

This happened on the second day of the 47th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday after Canada led a group of Western countries to release a joint statement to make groundless accusations of China on Xinjiang related topics.

The confrontations displayed at the UN human rights body show the battle between the truth about Xinjiang and rumors and lies made by the anti-China campaign led by the US and a small group of Western countries including Canada, analysts said.

On behalf of 65 countries, the representative of Belarus made a joint statement on Tuesday, stressing that respecting the sovereignty and integrity of each country is the basic code of international relations, and affairs on Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet are China's domestic affairs, which should not be interfered by outside forces.

The statement by the representative of Belarus also opposed double standards or politicalizing human rights issues. It opposes groundless accusations against China based on disinformation or political purpose; or using human rights as an excuse to interfere in China's domestic affairs.

Aside from the 65 countries, six countries from the Gulf Cooperation Council also sent a message to support China. More than 20 countries plan to deliver separate speeches to support China, making the total number to express understanding and support to China surpassing 90.

The number of countries that have expressed support to China was compared to the joint statement made by Canada on behalf of a group of Western countries, in which it urged China to allow the UN human rights chief to access Xinjiang to look into reports of "more than a million people being unlawfully detained" and some "subjected to "forced labor."

China has refuted rumors on "one million people" being "detained" or the existence of forced labor in its Xinjiang region, calling them a "total lie."

The so-called "genocide" and "forced labor" in Xinjiang are nothing but rumors with ulterior motives and downright lies. Its real purpose is to restrict and contain the development of relevant sectors and companies in China, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a press conference on Tuesday.

In contrast to the West's evidence-free accusation, people from Xinjiang also appeared at the Tuesday session to make their voices heard.

Gulnar Wuful, vice-chairperson of the Xinjiang Association for Science and Technology, also gave a video speech at the session of the UNHRC on Tuesday. She said that there have been no violent attacks in Xinjiang for more than four years and the region has enjoyed better economic and social development.

"As a Uygur scholar who has witnessed changes in Xinjiang in recent years, the development of human rights in the region has been witnessed by the international community. No anti-China force can undermine the stability of Xinjiang," said Gulnar.

On behalf of a group of countries, Ambassador Chen Xu, China's Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland, also said in a joint statement on Tuesday that "We are gravely concerned about baseless accusations by certain countries using human rights as a means to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, severely violating the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, while turning a blind eye to their own serious human rights problems."

Chen noted that some countries, under the pretext of democracy and human rights, want to impose their own values and models on others, and even use human rights as an excuse for military intervention and unilateral coercive measures, which has brought untold sufferings to the people of other countries.

"We also hope that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) will keep functioning in accordance with GA resolution 48/141 and within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states," said Chen.

There will be more battles against disinformation on China's Xinjiang at this session as the US is coming back to the UNHRC and is wielding its influence to pressure other countries to attack China and to hype related topics to smear China while trying to label China for "genocide," Zhu Ying, deputy director of the National Human Rights Education and Training Base of Southwest University of Political Science and Law, told the Global Times.

Zhu is scheduled to attend a sideline activity at the 47th session in the coming days and together with other Chinese scholars, they will share the truth on China's human rights situation with international experts.

Analysts also noted that under the pressure from the West, the High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, talked about China's Xinjiang and Hong Kong topics at the council on Monday, saying that she hopes to visit Xinjiang this year.

Liu Yuyin, spokesman for China's mission to the UN in Geneva, said on Monday that her visit should be a "friendly one" aimed at promoting cooperation "rather than making the so-called 'investigation' under the presumption of guilt."

Captain
Not for long, apparently iron recycling tech has become quite advanced that For every tonne of steel that is based on scrap steel, you save 1.6 tonnes of iron ore

By 2025, if China’s plan to make steel from scrap goes as planned, the country will save 480 million tonnes of iron ore imports each year. By 2030, imports will decrease by 660 million tonnes annually.

Combined that with increase import of secure russian or indonesian ores, China should be able reduce significantly its reliance on australian iron

Hmmm I guess we will have to wait and see. I remember discussing the subject with my social group when China lifted the ban on scrap steel at the beginning of the year.

The forever wars that the US launched after 9/11 led to a surge in military suicides, a new study claims, with traumatized soldiers taking their own lives as they are repeatedly deployed in conflicts that have no public support.
A new report by Brown University’s Costs of War Project
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
a new insight into what many dubbed an epidemic of suicides among the US military. Based on data from the DoD, the VA and secondary sources, the study found that at least four times as many military lives were lost to suicide than to combat in wars launched since the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Since President George W. Bush launched his global War on Terror in 2001, 7,057 service members have been killed in military operations. Over the same period, an estimated 5,116 active-duty personnel died by suicide. Between 2011 and 2020, 1,193 National Guard service members and 1,607 Reserve component service members also took their own lives. The suicide death toll among veterans of those wars was conservatively estimated at 22,261. The numbers totals 30,177 – more than four times higher than the combat deaths.

The estimated number of suicides is a minimum, the report stressed, as there was no statistical data available for Reserve and National Guard deaths prior to 2011. In addition, the statistics do not necessarily include every suicide, since in some cases attribution may be difficult. Overdose deaths, weapon misfires or single-vehicle crashes may not be conclusively linked to suicidal behavior.
Even so, the recorded suicide rates among both active-duty service members and veterans have surged and significantly surpass those in the general population, which itself has been increasing in the US, the study said.

This goes against historical trends. Active-duty personnel usually have lower suicide rates than the general public and these went even lower during wartime in every US conflict before Vietnam. More recent military suicide deaths continued to climb even after combat deaths sharply decreased after 2007.

The study says there is no single cause of the surge and outlines a number of factors that appear to drive soldiers to take their own lives. Some of those are the usual problems that members of armed conflicts face: exposure to physical and moral trauma, stress and burnout, military culture that requires soldiers to toughen up and hide what is perceived as weakness, and difficulties in adjusting to civilian life.

Other factors are specific to the kind of wars that the US has been waging over the past two decades. The wide use of improvised explosive devices against US troops has caused an increase in traumatic brain injuries and polytrauma. At the same time, advances in medical science and the sheer length of the forever wars allow soldiers to live and fight another day, even when they have to deal with chronic pain and other issues from their previous injuries. About a third of wounded soldiers go for at least one more deployment after recovering.

There is also sexual trauma that service members experience even when serving in any battlefield. Traumatic experience or threat of sexual assault affects over 23% of women in the military, the study said. That number is likely an underestimate, since a significant portion of the incidents of that nature remain unreported, partially due to threat of retaliation and the military’s proclivity to minimize them. Sexual harassment is experienced by an estimated 55% of women and 38% of men.

Another factor is that the US public is largely indifferent to the post-9/11 wars, and soldiers fighting them are well aware of this and often share the attitude. According to a 2018 poll, almost 60% of veterans did not think the US has clear strategic objectives in Afghanistan. Even more believed the war has not been a success. Another poll in 2018 showed that about 42% of American voters were either unaware of the conflicts in the Middle East or were convinced the War on Terror was over.

“As we come closer to the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we must reflect on the mental health cost of the Global War on Terror,” the report said. “The human cost for our veterans and service members far outweighs even the most crippling financial costs we have endured to send them to war.”
