F-2 was a silly project, but the idea was to build something a bit more "original" than strict license production like F-15J. Japan successfully executed E-767, C-2 and P-1 projects, which is probably more than most other countries can handle in a similar time period (i.e. India - Tejas). Problem with their projects is they are always over budget, faced with slim export chances leading to high unit cost, and plagued with quality issues (F-2 wing cracking, C-2 cargo door issues, P-1 sea water corrosion on wings and sensors, pretty critical issue for Maritime Patrol aircraft). If they manage a 5.5 gen fighter, they might be able to afford 20 at the exorbitant cost of $250 million each. In the end, their military projects are just like their post-90's consumer electronics, Galapagos products.
They had a much more competitive technology stack in the past to be able to go largely indigenous, however many areas have not been able to keep up with the times. They are in a somewhat similar situation to the British MIC, growing increasingly reliant on American exports or multi-national collaborations to get the latest capabilities. I believe the F-1 would be the last largely indigenous Japanese fighter aircraft and they will shop for another collaborator if GCAP fails for whatever the F-3 may be, not even going the KF-21 route.

On the supply side, nearly all Model Y and Model 3 units allocated to the Korean market come from the Chinese Gigafactory. By the end of April, China-built Teslas accounted for a staggering 97.6% of all registered Tesla vehicles operating in South Korea.

Japan is the master of perfecting technology. Yesterday's technology. The fax machines they have now must be incredibly executed pieces of artisinal cutting-edge engineering.

Wonder if this will affect the US markets and show if the Yen carry trades are still going on.

Here's an interesting take that posits the US actually learned all of it's monetary mismanagement policies from Japan.

Bear with me for a second with this crazy hypothetical scenario, but I honestly think if China wasn't as rich and powerful as it was today, the G7 nations would concoct some kind of colluded Debt Jubilee scheme to get themselves out of all their current problems as a result of all the borrowing and money printing today. Unfortunately for them, if they did that in the current day real world, every single penny that gets invested in the future pours into China instead.
