If he told his family it may be accessory after the fact, they might have had to protect themselves.
They are probably gonna weasel themselves out of giving reward money like how they gave nothing to the Luigi-reporter for not calling the hotline number or something.
I mean, it would be very awkward if they actually said "we found his confession through our blanket spying program on all citizen's phones"
