Cultural clash. Western culture is to never be honest, puff out your chest, fake it 'till you make it, always attempt to approach something from a position of power even when you are in weakness. High school drop out who carried ice buckets, restarted the hot dog machine and took out the trash at 7-11 dreaming about a 6 figure job? Resume says, "Uniquely educated thermal engineer with experience in troubleshooting advanced machinery and waste management considering a new career path and oppertunity of a lifetime for employer if specific salary requirements can be met." It's all about presenting yourself as a confident businessman in a suit with a grand proposal even when you are nothing but a beggar. So this beggar who desperately needs China's help, decides to tell China what we "must" do. It doesn't work in Asian culture, which is too intelligent to fall for such a poor trick and strongly believes in soft-spoken diplomacy. If you need China's help (not help with a genocide, of course but with something reasonable), you come with humility and you request humbly. You flatter your audience and make yourself poor so that you may earn his sympathy. The current approach only draws derision and laughter in China, a mentally ill beggar demanding food in the king's court telling the King that he "must" be fed for national security or some other funny reason. Are they even trying? Do they think these simple minded arguments can work for anyone, let alone CHINA, a country where history is examined with a microscope?
Bear in mind that the goal of American AI companies is to make money; not to create useful applications for AI. Moreover, the best way to make money nowadays isn't to make good products. It's to capture as much venture capital as possible thereby boosting stock prices! It's not just a matter of difference in philosophy; it's a sea change in the way the two countries see the value of money. It was a thorough discussion, listened to the whole thing. My cheap 2 cents.
1. It is about the supply chain. The supply chain in China is really huge, really technologically advanced, and has scale. You know, China speed. Now with the developments in the world and a branching out that comes naturally to a growing business, the supply chain in China is the main one, but there are pockets of the China supply chain in ASEAN, which we are reading quite a bit about last couple of years.
2. One point not mentioned, or I forget if it was said, but the guy never bothered to explain it, it was very simple. This supply chain, in one word, that is opportunity. Other developing countries want to be part of this, as when they buy capital goods from China, which are goods to make more goods, then that developing countries can raise income levels. Hence, the $1 trillion dollar trade surplus, is going to stick around a while. Simple developmental economics and motivations.
3. Then the last part of the talk, he claims that China is ahead with AI, in adaptation, and it is not even close. Factories are using it, for themselves and in their entire supply chain. That is the two themes that we should remember, as AI race today, is all about two things and they are 1) AGI - Artificial General Intelligence, aka Skynet, and 2) diffusion - which means application of AI technology on whatever.
Then the woman says that this sounds depressing.
Then the other guy later laughs, says he always is depressed.
Anyways, for me, it just confirms my own biases.
This is what I believe, and this talk only proved it more.
1. There is only one supply chain in the world and that is the China supply chain, as far as I am concerned. Sure, there are other supply chains, but nothing like the main game, the China supply chain.
2. The $1 trillion dollar trade surplus, best not to talk about that too much. They talked about all the reasons why there is a $1 trillion dollar trade surplus in that talk, without mentioned that basic fact. Shut up! Haha!
3. The two host, they were still kind of confused at the end when they summed it up in the post interview to end the episode of the podcast. About everything basically, hehe.
So just to say one last thing, the Chinese are aggressively rolling out AI diffusion onto anything and everything they can think of. Go visit a Chinese hospital, (according to recent Youtube videos), and they get the AI to do the initial triage. As that widespread diffusion is going on inside China, they are too busy working on AGI in America, as they want to win that race on paper.
It is a different business model, or philosophical outlook.
It is that expression from sports. The game is played on the field or on the ice, the game is not played on paper.
But with AGI, the game is played on paper, or so we are told.
Think for yourself, and the truth will set us free.

Donald Trump blocks Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te from New York stopover
Move comes as US and China hold trade talks and seek to stabilise relations
Donald Trump’s administration has denied permission for Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te to stop in New York en route to Central America, after China raised objections with Washington about the visit.
Lai planned to transit the US in August en route to Paraguay, Guatemala and Belize, which recognise Taiwan as a country. But the US told Lai he could not visit New York on the way, according to three people familiar with the decision.
On Monday in Taipei, Lai’s office issued a statement saying he had no plans to travel overseas in the near future because Taiwan was recovering from a recent typhoon and Taipei was in talks with the US about tariffs.
The people familiar with the matter said his decision not to travel came after he had been told he would not be allowed to visit New York.
The White House’s decision will deepen concerns among Taiwan’s supporters in Washington that Trump is taking a softer stance on China as he pushes to hold a summit with President Xi Jinping.
