Yes and no. He's crazy at many things but here, he is not. He is cutting off an infected leg like a crab in order to save the body. Ukraine is an unwinnable war that just drains Western and American resources. It doesn't even matter if it is won or lost; the tech war with China matters.
That... has always been him. He only respects people whom the West terms "dictators" because, as things turn out, those are the most dependable people to make deals with. Democracies change leaders terribly often and they don't always respect the deals made before them... oh, and their checks and balances causes them to be too slow to commit.

They do. They know exactly how badly America and its Western allies are broken, and cannot afford conflict with Russia and China. We can only guess from seeing the symptoms.
