It must be mentioned that in order to pay compensations to slave owners, European colonial governments took on large amount of debt, debt that over time rolls over and over at high interest rates. When European colonies were finally allowed independence, the new nations were forced to take on the debts of their predecessor colonial governments. As a result, many people/nations of the global south are still trapped to this day into paying massive debt interests to their former imperial masters for their ancestors' privilege of having been enslaved two hundred years ago.
