"Inscrutable" is rather a veiled insult as Chinese were purported to not show or have human emotions(esp noted during the horrible Century of Humiliation as various railway workers ,indentured slaves,menial workerscramped,neglected Chinatowns,etc and any interactions with the mainstream society was often outright racist,demeaning,and violent.The iron control of one's emotion was seen as subhuman-writer SaxRohmer's hateful "Fu Manchu" Yellow Peril,and stupid Charlie Chan etc was the portrayed norm
