Apparently the group is a gay and lesbian offshoot of the Black Lives Matters movement. They've been moved out of the way. I was told by a friend that the stopped traffic has reached the part of the freeway in my area. So that's about a 15 mile long parking lot. Traffic is now moving though as the protestors and cars have been cleared but the effects are going to last for hours.

on Saturday, January 16. These sanctions had previously handcuffed Iran’s trade activity including purchases of new build aircraft, and were lifted after Iran followed through on its promise to dismantle sections of its nuclear program.

The 114 aircraft include a mix of new and used Airbus A320 family aircraft as well as used Airbus A340 widebodies, with the first of these aircraft are expected to be delivered as early as July. Iran and Airbus have not yet explicitly held commercial talks (as those were banned under the sanctions), but the plans were confirmed by comments from Iranian ministers.

Iran’s order bonanza starts with mostly A320s
The Airbus order is the first leg of the upcoming Iranian aerospace windfall, and as we noted

, the initial Iranian aircraft orders were likely to include a heavy dose of used aircraft. Iranian commercial fleets are vintage (to put it kindly), and even a 15-20 year old A340 or A320 represents a substantial improvement in operating costs, dispatch reliability, and safety.

As far as the actual mix of orders, more details are likely to emerge this week, but looking at Iran Air’s current fleet, roughly 42% of its passenger fleet (20/47 aircraft) is composed of widebody aircraft with the balance narrowbodies (primarily Fokker F100s). Some of this is driven by availability and range for older aircraft, so the breakdown is likely to fall closer to 80-20 narrowbody to widebody in this new order. This would correspond to +/- 91 A320 family aircraft and +/- 23 A340 aircraft.

The 23 A340s would allow one-to-one replacement of Iran Air’s A300s, A310s, and Boeing 747s with 3-4 frames for growth.
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
, there are currently 78 A340s actively marketed as for sale by airlines around the world. These break down as 6 A340-200s (all between 16 and 23 years old), 44 A340-400s (between 7 and 22 years old), 16 A340-500s (between 8 and 13 years old), and 14 A340-600s (once again between 8 and 13 years old). The A340-200s are too old to be economically feasible, so isolating to focus on the A340-300s, 500s, and 600s, the 14 A340-600s make a lot of sense.

The A340-600s can operate pretty much any route that Iran Air would want to, except for Tehran-Australia/New Zealand (Sydney/Auckland/Melbourne/Brisbane). Los Angeles would be pushing it, but at 6,614 nautical miles, it is technically within the range of the A340-600, which has been used by South African Airways to operate Johannesburg-New York JFK nonstop in the past. As an added bonus four engines of the A340 offset any hot/high performance issues that Tehran might pose. The A340-600s should be supplemented by 8-10 of the youngest A340-300s on the market, several of which are marketed by Airbus.

Using the same FleetIntel database, there are 48 A320 family aircraft available on the market (9 A319s, 30 A320s, and 9 A321s), and presumably Iran Air would immediately buy 20 or so A320s and 5-10 A321s (some of the Russian ones on the market are very young). Iran Air could also strike a deal with a lessor or another airline to buy out an existing fleet of A320s or A321s. This would leave 60-65 A320 family aircraft to order as new builds, and with the neo sold out for a while, this might be split as 40 neos and 20 current engine options (ceos). As far as the variants, something that might make sense is 20 new build A320 ceos, 25 A320neos and 15 A321neos (or A321neoLRs).

Is Boeing Next?
While Airbus has won the opening salvo in terms of Iranian orders,

that Boeing could win some orders as well in the near future. Iran is reportedly considering the Boeing 737 and Boeing 777 (there are tons of these floating around on the used market), as well as smaller jets from Embraer and Bombardier. The big payoff for Boeing could be on the 777, as an Iranian order for 20-30 new Boeing 777-300ERs would do wonders towards bridging the production gap to the re-engined Boeing 777X. Even an order for used 777s would help boost the value on the secondary market,

after comments by Delta CEO Richard Anderson. Boeing has technically been cleared by the US government to negotiate with Iran but must proceed more cautiously than Airbus given its more uncertain political environment. But we expect Iranian orders for Boeing planes to be announced later this year. Still, 2016 has begun with a bang for Airbus thanks to the folks in Tehran."

Major
With the economy hitting recession now, there'll be more aircraft leasing companies looking into releaseing some of their fleet's assets to secure more liquid assets and reduce the upkeep cost, while Iran Air is looking to overhaul it entire fleet. Looks like a win-win for all parties here.

World’s largest canyon spotted by Chinese scientists

The world’s largest canyon far larger than the Grand Canyon in the United States has been spotted by the Chinese scientists who took part in the country’s latest Antarctic expedition to the South Pole.

The canyon, more than 1000 kilometres’ long, 1500 metres deep, and 26.5 kilometres wide at the top, is larger than the Grand Canyon and is the largest canyon discovered on earth, state-run Xinhua quoted Chinese scientists who took part in China’s 32nd Antarctic expedition as saying.

Giant wetland beneath Antarctic ice

China’s expedition team, which launched the search around the Princess Elizabeth Area of the South Pole in last November, has also found many sub-glacial lakes and currents connected to the canyon, forming a giant “wetland” beneath the Antarctic ice.

They also detected large-scale “warm ice” under the sheet along with a number of lakes. Warm ice can easily be melted into water.

‘Will increase research in the area’

“It is very exciting that Chinese scientists led the survey and made the findings,” Sun Bo, vice-leader of the expedition team said. He said the achievements would help significantly with research in the area.

In recent years, science circles speculated through satellite remote sensing measures that there should be a giant canyon or lake covered by ice in the Princess Elizabeth Area.

The Chinese expedition team had surveyed an area of 8,66,000 km with the aid of China’s first fixed-wing aircraft, carrying an ice radar, high-precision differential GPS system.

China launched its 32nd Antarctic expedition with the research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong (Snow Dragon) on November 7.

Actually...not.

If you just are talking just about the "official" length,,,then yes, this discovery is longer.

But even then, that is only because the Grand Canyon has been ascribed a certain length, when in actuality the canyon part of the Colorado River in that area extends further than the 277 miles ascribed to the Grand Canyon.

You have to go well above Glen Canyon to the start, and well below the end of what is called the Grand Canyon to get out of the actual canyon there. I have been on both sides...and when you enter the "Grand Canyon" you have already been in a canyon for a long time. Same when you exit the official boundary.

So that is a fairly relative measure that could easily be argued.

But the other dimensions can not.

Grand Canyon:
Length: 450 km (277 miles) (Ascribed)
Deepest Depth: 1,857 m (6,093 ft)
Widest Width: 29 km (18 miles)

Chinese Antarctica Discovery:
Length: 1,000 km (620 miles)
Deepest Depth: 1,500 m (4,920 ft)
Widest Width: 26.5 km (16.5 miles)

has been drinking lead-polluted water since April 2014, as the embattled governor of Michigan struggled to stem the crisis.

Flint's tap water has been

, and the liquid flowing from the pipes is a thick brown colour. The city's 100,000 residents have to buy bottled drinking water, and some parents are bathing their children in mineral water after reporting skin rashes from the taps.

Rick Snyder, the governor, released hundreds of pages of emails relating to his handling of the crisis in a bid to show transparency and leadership.

But among the emails was a conversation with Mr Snyder's chief of staff, expressing concern that the issue could become "a political football" without yielding suggestions as to how to solve it.

The saga began when the cash-strapped city, under a state-appointed emergency manager, switched its source from Lake Huron, which Detroit uses, to Flint River water, in a bid to save money.

"What is inexplicable and inexcusable is once people figured out that there was a problem there and that there was lead in the water, the notion that immediately families weren't notified, things weren't shut down," said Mr Obama, who was in Detroit on Wednesday.

"If I were a parent up there, I would be beside myself that my kid's health could be at risk."

Mr Snyder has been facing protests, lawsuits and calls for his resignation.

He apologised to the city's residents on Tuesday and called for the state to spend $28 million on fixing the situation.

The US Environmental Protection Agency, while saying it was reviewing its handling of the crisis and could have acted faster to inform the state of what measures it should take, also blamed the state on Tuesday. It said the agency's oversight was hampered by "failures and resistance at the state and local levels."

Flint did not return to Detroit water until October 2015 after tests showed elevated levels of lead, which can cause brain damage and other health problems, in Flint tap water and in some children. Corrosive water from the river, known locally as a dumping ground, caused more lead to leach from Flint pipes than Detroit water did.

"This is something nobody should have to deal with. Everybody should have clean water," said Karen Weaver, mayor of Flint.

In a speech on Tuesday, Mr Snyder said federal, state and local leaders had failed residents. He asked Michigan to authorise spending on diagnostic tests, health treatment for children and adolescents, replacement of old fixtures in Flint schools and day care centres and a study of the city's water pipes.

He also released 274 pages of Flint-related emails from 2014 and 2015, ranging from press releases to staff memos and planning notes.

"We can't tolerate increased lead levels in any event, but it's really the city's water system that needs to deal with it," wrote Dennis Muchmore in September 2015.

He said the state Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Community Health "feel that some in Flint are taking the very sensitive issue of children's exposure to lead and trying to turn it into a political football, claiming the departments are underestimating the impacts on the populations and particularly trying to shift responsibility to the state."

As many as 9,000 children may have suffered lead poisoning.

Several lawsuits have been filed in the case. The latest, on Tuesday, asked a judge to stop Flint from issuing "shut-off notices" to residents who are still receiving bills for water declared undrinkable

What I can't understand is how something like this can happen in a developed nation like the USA?

Why is something as basic as water safety dependent on a town's local finances? That just boggles the mind! Why did it take Michael Moore to call on Obama before something is done?

I argue the opposite. It is because the US is a developed nation and has been one for such a long time that things like these happens.

This would not be an issue to a country who gets their water from wells or rivers and has no industry to speak off to contaminate such sources.
We have infrastructure issues and much of these lead came from gasoline from many decades ago (when gas was no UNLEADED).. that has sine seep into the ground and contaminated the water.

Same holds true for medication. Much of the water in the US is actually contaminated with drugs especially perscription drugs when people/companies just flush hundreds of tons down the toilet.

I am very cognizant on where or how I dispose of expired or unnused medication. You have to bascially incinerate them but millions of people flush them down the toilet or just throw them out with their garbage,.

That's understandable, but I was not referring to the pollution per se, but rather the fact that the town's water safety was compromised due to local finances and that this state of affairs was allowed to continue for over 9 months!

Yesterday my Dutch paper,

, had an article about it that said the emergency city manager tried to save $12 million by taking the acid water from the river instead of the Detroit water. The acid corroded the lead water supply pipes and so poisoned the population. Replacing the damaged pipes is said to cost $1.5 billion.
