The destroyer first appeared as a class in the early 20th century. They were intended to act as pickets, using their speed and superior firepower to keep enemy torpedo boats away from the main line of battleships in a dreadnought battle. By WWII they were being used as an all purpose vessel; they engaged in surface combat but were most useful when being used against submarines (defending convoys or as part of a larger fleet) and as AAA bases to defend carriers.

Both of those roles are destroyers main purpose today. However the destroyer of today is a much different vessel from the destroyer of WWII. Destroyers have grown in size a now have batteries of guided missles. They are the main and largest surface vessels for many of the worlds navies and are certainly not obsolete because they perform cunctions that no other vessle can. A carrier's destroyer escort simaltaeneously protects the carrier from incoming missles, acts as an ASW shield, adds an anti-surface punch to what the carrier's air wing can deliver and (in the case of the USN) can hit land targets as well with TLACMs.

QBZ95 or QBZ03

Hi I'm new to this forum and I HAVE used the search function and nothing came up regarding this topic so please don't "flame".

Will the PLA be using the QBZ03 or QBZ95 in the future? I'm sure many of you guys have seen this picture:

But do you guys know if that is actually the Army and not the special police?

I would hope it will be effective against multiple infantry. If not I like to go and say hi to the makers of this weapon.:nono:

Still fires fast enough (260 rounds per minute) to do plenty of damage... The XM307 fires 25mm HE rounds... and both are almost half the weight of the M2 meaning that they are man portable.

N001VE Specs?

I am trying to find some specs on the SU-30MKK radar. Having some issues finding "in stone" information that isn't skeptical. If anyone have pictures of it that would also be cool. Really any information on any part of the A/C is appreciated.

Not that you'll use 50 cal fire routinely on a squad basis. And there is Singapore's own .50 HMG, not coming to the US anytime soon.

Ive got three questions:

1. I recently read that the new 956EM Sov's China ordred had their SAM system upgraded from Shtil to Shtil-One. This was not mentioned in earlier reports and descriptions of the ships. Can anyone confirm this? Also, what makes the latter better than the former?

2. 167 began a refit several months ago, and I have not seen pics or reports of what has happened since. Anyone know?

3. How is the PLAN currently adressing its ASW needs? I havn't seen a class of vessel made for the need yet (54B?)
