Thats actually a very good point, wondering why Thailand didn't choose the lighter one like T-96A.
It seems VT-4 has a better specs than T-84M

why we not choose Type-96A? caz china not offer type-96A to us.
and in many thai defence forum, many thai peoples worry about mbt-3000 reliability and quality after mbt-3000 was lose to BM oplot in pakistan tank program. they want china to offer our army type-99.

I don't think Thailand would need Chinese Type-99A, simply too heavy and against who?
I am pretty sure China would offer export variant of Type-96A, especially to Thailand, a close friend

According to this report on Chinese website last year, Pakistan choosing Oplot over MBT-3000 was just a rumor originally came out from a Spanish web blog. Pakistan has not imported Oplot anyway.
The export version of Type 96 is MBT 2000, it has been exported to several countries, Myanmar being one of them. Here you can see MBT 2000 in Sudan:

VT-4 has the same engine and electronics as the 99A, which are the best China has got in hand. The gun is in the same class as 99A/96, and the firepower depends on what kind of ammo it's equipped with. The only advantage 96 has is probably the armmor.
I would like to point out that 96's engine power really lags far behind (800 hp vs. 1200, adjustable up to 1500)

The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has signed an agreement with China to procure the MBT-3000 main battle tank (MBT) produced by China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), RTA officials confirmed to IHS Jane's on 16 May.
The contract to procure the MBT-3000, which is also referred to by NORINCO as the VT-4, features an initial 28 units, with deliveries expected to commence before the end of 2016 and conclude within two years. The deal, thought to be valued at about USD150 million, makes Thailand the first known export customer of the type.
If the first batch of deliveries is successful, sources indicated the RTA would look to procure additional MBT-3000s as it seeks to meet a long-standing requirement for up to 150 MBTs.

The 99's ZPT-98 gun is very much superior to the 2A46M-derived gun on the 96s. It has a high chamber pressure, is more sturdy and is L/50 instead of L/48 like on the 96. This gives it a flatter trajectory, higher muzzle velocity and avoids the flutter of the 2A46M family that significantly impacts accuracy at ranges greater than 2km. By most accounts, the ZPT-98 is based on the 120mm BWK120 gun on the PTZ-89 tank destroyer that emulated Western gun designs from the likes of Rheinmetall.
The combat weight of a ZTZ-96A is 42 tonnes. The VT-4 is ten tonnes heavier and much newer. I find it hard to believe that a design ten tonnes heavier and ten years newer will have inferior armour.The only advantage 96 has is probably the armmor.
