The FFGs simply have to be fighting ships and true FFGs. The Freedom LCS can be turned into decnt FFGs with better armament, better sensors, larger crews, and the modular spaced used for permanent capabilities. The Independence LCS can also be similarly upgunned, but then used for working wth the Amphibious groups, and along the lines I suggested above.

not as good as if we have built 56 true FFgs from the beginning...but with 13 Indpendence class geared toward assisting Amphibs, ASW, and counter mine, and 3 Freedom class as essentially lighter FFGs and then 30 true FFGs, the US Navy will have benefited a lot...even if we did waist ten years getting there.

Then with all the Burkes and the coming Burke IIs and all the Virginias, etc., the US Navy will remain the bulwark for ensuring freedom of the seas for the next 50 years just like they have for the last 50 years.

as for destroyers: DDG-103, DDG-105, DDG-106, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 commissioned; it's nine, 54+9=63

frigates: the OHPs retired ...

LCSs: seven commissioned (and on this occasion I refrain from commenting)

attack submarines: eight commissioned (SSN-778 to SSN-785; I repeat I'm talking the period from 9/30/08 to 9/30/16), I admit I now failed to account for all 52 shown in that table for 2016 (Virginias 12, Seawolfs 3, FI LAs 5, FII LAs 8, FIII LAs 22 is 50, not 52), but that's definitely not my point, my point is if ever have a grandkid and he (or she LOL!) asks me, hey Jura what did you do when China was catching up with the USN, I'll say: I joined a specialized forum and was posting about it there, you know

Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine awarded contract to build LCS 27
The U.S. Navy awarded the Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) team a contract to build an additional LCS. The contract value is under the 2017 congressional cost cap of $584 million per ship.

LCS 27 will be built at Fincantieri Marinette Marine, the Midwest’s only naval shipyard, and is the 14th Freedom-variant LCS ordered by the U.S. Navy to date.

Navy Awards Remaining 2017 Littoral Combat Ships; Austal Gets Second LCS, Lockheed to Build 1

The Navy on Friday awarded contracts to Lockheed Martin and Austal USA to build one Littoral Combat Ship each, completing the service’s 2017 LCS buy after previously awarding Austal a contract for another LCS earlier this year.
