Why do you even bother bring China into this discussion? :nono:

Because in the first post, the following was said:

"Are the JSDF nothing more than a 'police force' begging to have China, India or whoever else bowl them over?"

I believe Japan has the best economy for a full scale military build up after WWII.

It won't take long for it to arm up, however, it is better for it not to do so, especially when other nations' trust for Japan (including Western and Eastern powers large and small) still has not truly recovered yet.:(

When talking about Atom Bomb, I think Japan will never be allowed to develop it. The situation in Iran is an example. (The fewer the atom bomb in the world the better.)

Kampfwagen, can you please post link so that we may read the rest of the article? Thanks!

Ah...Well...See, it was not so much an article as it was a...ah...Game FAQ. It's on IGN under Over-G, fighters. Which looks like something us guys might enjoy, by the way (if you dont have access to a computer flight-sim game). It's hard to miss, it's the only guide there.

Here it is. Since we are here, I wonder what else we can pick apart in this guy's little FAQ? By the way, feel free to take a good look at his signature to get an idea of just how this guy thinks.

Again, I am sorry if this spirals out of control. Everyone, let's stay civil now!

Well, considering it's a FAQ about a computer game then there's not much left to pick apart, is there? I mean, the worldview, the physics, the resources, etc are all different from the real world. You can have unlimited missiles, special abilities, guns that need "recharging", etc.

Of course the dude tries to explain stuff to people who haven't played flightsims at all before (planes are hot, so IR missiles are attracted to you, etc) but I really doubt there's any point to point out mistakes in it.

Well, neither did I, but it was that one statement in particular that was irking me. But people wanted to see it, so what the hell, I'll let you guys do whatever.

the real problem with japan's military industrial is they are making stuff too expensive; japanese use state of the art material without improving the design much which doesn't really give the perfromance expected for something 3x as expensive, it is far cheaper to just buy more advanced foreign models that can do more.

for it to be armed completely by itself up would be a joke due to the ineffective cost to perfromance ratio.

Japan wants to have industrial capability to design and build sophisticated designs and they wouldn’t have that capability if they would joust buy foreign designs…
Japanese indigenous equipment is so expensive (unit price) because they have large R&D costs but weapons are usually procured in quite small batches (for example look at F-22 or Rafale)…

that was a case a few years ago, before the cost started balloon out of control... there is a difference between WANT and CAN, and japan is beginning to see that it simply cannot maintain it with only domestic orders.

for comparison, south korea knowing it's limits, work on a trainer jet design around the F-16; which is design for export to a world market where military supersonic jet trainer is rare. this allows profitablility while generating experience in building aircraft.
