Yeah the Japanese navy sunk all of the major US capital ship save the Enterprise and Ranger. US production rebuilt the fleet and then some. Japan just could not compete.

Plus the fact that the IJ forces were not rotated out of combat zones. This created a great attrition espically of the pilots. I.m sure the JSDF has abandoned these policies.

As to the amphib excersises in San Diego..I wonder if this is just a pre-cursor to a larger excersise for them nearer to home?.Perhaps a larger landing say 2000 troops at Okinawa. I'm sure that would raise some eyebrows in the PRC as well as the rest of Asia. 'Cause you ain't got 4 of these for nuthin'.

well, the japanese did rebuild quite well in 1942 and 1943. they started out with 10 carriers, and even after midway, coral sea, guadalcanal,(a total loss of 5 heavy and 2 light cariers), they had 13 by the time of the battle of the philipine sea. after that though, most carriers were build from maru.

Retake a small island?
What island(s) is Japan going to retake anyway? I don't think they have any to retake or are in need of retaking.

mabye the idea is that if any of their small islands were occupied by an enemy force during wartime, then they could retake it?

Exactly, how can the JMSDF defend Japan (including its outlaying islands) if it doesn't know how to launch a counter-attack?

I have to agree with the previous statements that Japan is a good friend of the US. Selling on old carriers? Hmm, perhaps - but only if the US really made it worth their while by giving a good price. Japan would be able to afford new carriers if it modified the constitution sufficiently. It's not an issue of price, it's an issue of political/national will.

IDonT, I would like to see Japan come out of its shell more, such as participating in much more peacekeeping - perhaps also sending some JMSDF ships on anti-piracy operations, helping out the Malays, Singaporeans & Indonesians. Though those guys might feel a little uncomfortable about that ;)

Not going to happen. the cost to make one of the retired USN CV's operational is astrominical. Perhaps as much as $2 billion dollars. Many vital parts have been revoved from the 4 retired CV's the USN has. Propellers, rudders, Anchors, Anchor chains. Most electronics, Catapults, arresting gear. ..Plus the unbelievabe expense of operating one of these 80,000 ton dispalcement levithants..There oiled fired you know. No not even the Japanese could afford to operate one. Nope ain't gonna happen.
