I read the full article ... honestly I don't think JH-7B will be produced, it simply obsolete and JH-7A is just fine. With the introduction J-16, the PLAN version will be available soon .. so no point to produce JH-7B.
The article does say it is a prototype and may not going into production
I agree...but JH-7A has been improved over time, and as a supersonic ASM carrier it is still a VERY effective weapon, just like the new H-6Ks are.
They are good enough to be able to, particularly with any decent air superiority support from J-15s, or J-11Bs, or J-20s, to keep other nations concerned about dangerous surface attack capabilities of they get too close...and from a LOT of missiles if the PRC ever had to.
Of course, other nations relize this and would utilize tactics to try and clear up the air superiority support, or to themselves using stealth. to get into range wth many of their own ASMs before ever having to risk the larger naval vessels.
The PRC is making good use of what it has, and is, like the US, keeping older technology aircraft modernized enough to be of concern.
The US does the same with the B-52s, and with the F-15Cs and F-15Es.
