Originally, the Chinese wished to incorporate variable wings on the Q-6, which was a sort of spiritual predecessor to the JH-7. However, the design was deemed too complex for the available technological knowhows at the time.

Hello Siege. Interesting that you mention the Q-6, which was a very modified Mig-23/27 with a chin/ belly air intake. The two main problems (two of many) that I know about were reverse engineering the engine and the swing wing mechanism.

This Q-6 aircraft with fixed wings similar to the JH-7 or J-22 Orao would have made a very interesting aircraft

Yes indeed ... IMO one of most remarkable projects, maybe only bettered by the J-9 ....

The bottom red circle actually looks like a targeting pod for the LT-2 rather than rockets, especially since it's mounted underbelly instead of on a wing pylon.
