Another Article on the RD-93 Re-Export Debate

Yet another article, this one expressing the confidence of Chinese officials that Russia will agree to sell the engine to Pakistan.

Quite frankly, I would find it doubtful that both China and Pakistan would devote so many resources to develop the FC-1/JF-17, if they didn't have strong reason to believe that export approval would be forthcoming for the engine.

Possible Air Show Venue

For those of us disappointed that the FC-1/JF-17 failed to make a live appearance at this year's Air Show China (only a model was available for static display), there is one remaining venue where the airplane may yet make a public appearance this year.

Pakistan is scheduled to hold their own IDEAS 2006 Air Show at Karachi later this month (21-24 November).

There have been a number of rumors afloat that Pakistan's JF-17 prototype just might make an appearance at this year's event.

should probably have posted this earlier, but it looks like JF-17 will be delivered to PAF next year. Good news for PAF, since it can now start testing
Pakistan set to get eight JF-17 fighter jets next year

KARACHI (Reuters) - Pakistan is set to get the first batch of eight medium-technology fighter jets from China next year and the country would start manufacturing them locally from January 2008, a senior military official said on Wednesday.

"We shall...have the first two (JF-17 Thunder fighter) aircraft on March 23rd, while the remaining of the first batch of eight aircraft will also arrive next year," Air Marshal Khalid Choudhry, Chairman of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, told Reuters. PakistanFlag.gif

"The hardcore production of JF-17 in Pakistan will start in January 2008." BVICTORY.GIF

According to the agreement between China and Pakistan, once full production starts, half the planes would be produced in China and half in Pakistan.

Chengu Aircraft Design Institute designed the aircraft and the prototypes were manufactured by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Company -- both based in China's Sichuan province.

Choudhry said the medium-technology aircraft, a joint production with China, matches the Mirage in performance but has better avionics and weapons.

Air force officials said the JF-17 could achieve a speed of 1.6 Mach, altitude of 55,000 feet and carry weapons of modern warfare.

The JF-17 are due to replace the ageing fleet of Mirage 3 and 5, A-5 and F-7 aircraft.

Choudhry said the Pakistan Air Force was looking to acquire 200 to 300 such aircraft, while the Chinese Air Force would also acquire some.

"We plan to start producing 20 to 25 aircraft every year from 2008, and they would be the main strength of the Pakistan Air Force," Choudhry said on the sidelines of a four-day arms exhibition in the port city of Karachi.

He said Pakistan also planned to export JF-17 once its full production started in the country.

"This aircraft will cost less then $20 million, so it is a very attractive equipment for the third world and developing countries who has small air forces and small budget," he said.

"A number of countries have already approached us," he said hoping that Pakistan Aeronautical Complex would start getting orders from other countries by next year. BANANA.GIF

Pakistan is mainly dependent on imports from the United States, France and China to meet its defence needs.

Last month, Pakistan and the United States signed a letter of acceptance for a multi-billion dollar package to supply the Pakistan Air Force with 18 new F-16 warplanes, as well as an unspecified number of upgraded second-hand F-16s.

The United States will also sell Pakistan missile weaponry and other support infrastructure, and upgrade Pakistan's present fleet of 34 old-model F-16s.

Shows bunch of diagrams for payload and structural dimensions.
I don't really want to be too down on it, since it looks like PAC's website, but it really looks kind of amateurish. I don't have much faith in the information it shows.

PAF prepares for JF-17s in 2007

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) will take delivery of the first eight of 150 new JF-17 (FC-1) fighter aircraft built with Chinese co-operation in 2007 and hopes to have enough experience of flying the aircraft to consider marketing it for overseas customers by 2008, the chief of the Pakistan Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir -Mehmood Ahmed, has told Jane's.

The remarks from Pakistan's air force chief came in an interview during the country's largest biannual defence export exhibition, held in Karachi from 21-24 November: an event used by Pakistani officials to promote the JF-17.

ACM Ahmed said, beyond the planned induction of the 150 JF-17 aircraft by 2015, the PAF may have to approach the Pakistani government for clearance to buy more aircraft as it prepares to replace some of its ageing fighter fleet, such as the A-5s and the A-7s and French Mirage jets.

From a Chinese defence industry point of view, do you really want Pakistan to sell FC-1s to other 3rd world nations? I would presume the Chinese prefer to be the ones selling to other 3rd world nations?

I know this might have been discussed before but is the PLAAF buying some only because they have to, not because they want to?

Well both Pakistan and CAC are all for exporting this plane. I am sure they have some kind of arrangement for the sales. CAC can provide lots of technical support and build the plane (maybe some in PAK some in China) where as Pakistan can provide training and logistical support. Alot of countries could be influenced by PAF (Bangladesh, Srilanka and maybe Iran) due to the history PAF has training their personal.

Not a bad deal for both CAC and PAC/PAF.
