If the Italia's M346 and Russia's Y-130 are in the mix... why not proposing the Jl-9 and Jl-10 ? It would not be a joint Pakistan-Chinese proposal tho...
The article also suggests that these candidates are proposed to replace the RMAF's inventory of Mig-29s that it has on reserve - I suppose the JF-17 provides more firepower and bang-for-your-buck than an advanced lead-in trainer.

FTC-2000 (JL-9) is not really in the same league. It uses a turbojet engine and I don’t think BVR is a part of the base package. There is also stigma for being based on the MiG-21.
Sure but if they look also for m-346 or yak-130 to replace Mig-29... Jf-17 is overkill, lol. THey clearly have more band for the bucks with the jf-17.

JL9 aka L-15, or rather L-15B, has been proposed for Malaysia's LCA program.

The RMAF seeks a platform that is capable of effectively conducting air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, with future maritime strike capability. It must also be able to conduct counterinsurgency operations, be "economically viable" and able to conduct operations in two theaters simultaneously at very short notice.

Following an RFI, eight types of aircraft were proposed by their respective manufacturers in 2018. They include KAI FA-50 (South Korea), HAL Tejas (India), PAC/Chengdu JF-17 (Pakistan), Yakolev YAK-130 (Russia), Leonardo M-346 (Italy), Hongdu L-15B (China), Aero Vodochody L-39NG (Czech Republic) and the Boeing T-7 Red Hawk (US).

But then... today's news, so most likely no go ahead on the LCA program:-
