Re: JF-17/FC-1 Fighter Aircraft thread 2009

pretty much like what's said above, they mentioned that Pakistan is paying $1 billion USD for the 42 JF-17s in the first batch. Turns out a little more expensive than i thought, but I think that also includes the sale of the assembly line.

1billion for 42 planes? I think is consider cheap even if without the assembly line included. After redesign with DSI inlet and LERX and more advance cockpit. Definitely, it will increase abit from the original estimate of USD 15-20million dollars each. The price tag is still consider very attractive and competitive internationly.

Is the pilot really wearing no visor, or does he actually have a clear visor down, wich I just don't see?

But a nice picture. Are there clear pics of this plane with a full load out, btw?

Visor is up. It is a standard PAF equipment for fighterpilots : HGU-55/MBU-12

You do have them with 2 visors but as far as I know PAF only uses the dark version. So it is a PAF pilot doing final test before delivery.

Is it possible to modify FC-1 to be fit with M53-P2 or so call WS-9II which claims to have reach the performance of M53-P2?

M53-P2 - powered later Mirage 2000C models and used to upgrade earlier models [2]
Dry thrust: 64.7 kN (6,600 kgp / 14,500 lbf)
Afterburning thrust: 95.1 kN (9,700 kgp / 21,400 lbf)

It seems M53-P2 is superior in performance compare to RD-93.

Its too long, it wouldn't really fit properly. You would need to redesign the entire airframe for it to work (the M53 is thinner and is about the same weight though).

But then wasn't one of the chief claimed selling point of the FC1/JF17 its modular design that can allow the installation of different engines if the customer wanted it?

Obviously there are going to be limits in what engines it can easily accommodate this way, but I would have thought the likes of the WS9 and M53 would have been some of the more likely alternative engine options and so some consideration might have been given towards using them as backups/upgrades perhaps?

Well I'm not saying that can't absolutely not put one in, it would require some modifications. Things like weight and balance are VERY precise things to consider for building an aircraft. I'm sure Chengdu could build a slightly modified FC-1 with a different engine in a a few months (which is pretty fast in the world of aviation) but its not 'modular' in the sense that you can just take the old engine and stick whatever else in its place.

They added rd33 in Mirage F1...

They did make the Fc1 modular. Not only the avionics but also the rest. The engine area has some reserve to be altered without major redesign. That was one of the variables put on top by PAF. But indeed it will need some word for CAC...

Like I said, I'm not refuting that the FC-1 can take other engines, I'm saying, that to be specific, its not something that could be done on the field but would require some testing and modification. The FC-1 can be fitted with a more different engines than most contemporary aircraft but in order to maximise the potential benefits of any given aircraft engine the the airframe would have to go under some minor refurbishments.
