FON ops is meaningless in this case with Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and US giving US access to US military throughout Japan.

But the US says they are not "taking any one's side" therefore prohibits ALL party by further antagonizing the SCS tensions by building anything upon reefs and shoals.

But it's a claim never the less, so no US FON ops when the Japanese were adding support work to hold those markers?
FONOP is applicable whenever there is excessive maritime claim. I don't know whether this particular case has merit. Since you are the one calling for FONOP, can you please at least explain the nature of the excessive maritime claim in question that would warrant a FONOP.

Doesn't that claim prohibits FON for commercial ships as well? It doesn't have to be excessive just a matter of principal that Japan is doing it and the US Navy didn't do any FONOP is clear that they are choosing picking a side that abides to them after claiming otherwise. Bottom line: it's hypocrisy to the fullest.

What is the US military going to achieve by doing it?
Basically the US are doing military exercise within Japanese territory so how are you going to differentiate the present activities with a FON operation?
The USN can sail a ship to Nagasaki the same way they can sail to Okinotori Shima, nobody is going to see anything different from the two.

I actually find your comments funny. I understand your reasoning but FONOP is specifically targeting excessive maritime claims and not some politically correct program.

What would a FONop do in this case. I mean US Japanese relations are such that the US basically has cart blanch in Japanese waters. It would be like protesting a Carpool lane by filling your car with protesters and driving in the carpool lane.
