Oh yes. Japan has been operating F-4s since 1968 I believe.

The aircraft they have now, their upgrade to the EF/RF-4EJ aircraft were all built by Mitsubishi.

Another amazing aircraft story. Japan has been operating them for almost 48 years. F-4s first flew in 1958, and have been in continuous service around the world since 1960...over 55 years!

Amazing for a fighter/bomber aircraft. 5,200 or so were built.

The F-4 reminds me of the Mig-21...which is also still in use. This is OT.

It's first flight was in 1956, a year after the F-4 first flew. But the Russians got it into service several months earlier than the F-4, in 1959. Almost 11,500 of them were built. And, if you add the J-7, of which 2,400 or so were built, you have a total of 13,900 built.

Amazing. Next to the Mig-15 (almost 18,000 of them were built in total) the Mig-21 would be the most prolific jet fighter in history.

The land ministry is expected to advise Okinawa's governor on Wednesday to withdraw his cancellation of a permit for land reclamation needed for relocating a US base in the prefecture.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters on Tuesday that the land ministry will deliver a document containing a recommendation to this effect to Governor Takeshi Onaga.

He suggested that if Onaga does not follow the recommendation, then the government will go ahead with procedures to authorize the reclamation work by proxy, in accordance with the law.

The Japanese government plans to move the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Ginowan City to the less populated coastal district of Henoko in the prefecture.

Onaga revoked a permit issued by his predecessor for the reclamation work in the area, saying the permit is flawed.

Earlier on Tuesday, Japanese cabinet ministers agreed that the permit has no flaws and that the governor's revocation is illegal.

As I am sure we have all been reminded the US and Japan agreed that they would relocate in after 1996 IF ALTERNATIVE FACILITIES were made available . The key worries being the location of the base in a heavily populated area.

Outside of the US Navy, there is only one other navy or nation that could put on a show like this with four of their own, indigenous such vessels:

JS Ise, DDH-182
