I thought 歼 is only for PLAAF aircraft. If it's strictly an export model, then it should be FC-X like how JF-17 is designated FC-1. Maybe they'll revive the FC-31 name.

Recent trend seems to be for export models to have similar name as the domestic PLA version, eg: J-10CE, Y-20BE, 052DE etc. There's marketing value for customer to claim they're getting same/similar gear as PLA.
Export version of FC-31 could well be J-31E or J-35E given the pattern.

I don't see such trend though. Those examples are all in service in PLA already. So far there is no precedent that a pure expoert equipment got a PLA designation.
I think AVIC is going with the PLAAF naming route because potential customers want something in service within the PLA.
Maybe I missunderstood the discussion. If there is a J-31 (PLAAF), then its expoert will be J-31E. FC-1 (JF-17) was not in service in PLA therefor no J designition. But if PLAAF does not accept J-31 in their service, its export will have to be something else. PLA won't let anybody to use their name or label.
Besides, it is nothing new really. China has exported many J-6, J-7 and Q-5, all without separate names.

Apparently the PLAN has officially hinted that the J-35 has already been operated from Liaoning.

Hmm ... I agree, but indeed thsi (via Google Lens only) sounds more like a "new" type:
