J-8 next gen

Bouncing off something Gollevainen said about the PLA not trying to develop a twin engine 4th generation fighter, here is suped up J-8 with a few 4th generation charactristics:

* Twin fins and ventral fins
* Double delta wings
* Semi-recessed PL-11s (/PL-12s) under engine intakes
* Redesigned intakes
* Bubble canopy



I then tried a 5th generation revamp using the J-8 as a base. Keeping the same tail planes (minus the tip bullet fairings) and leading edge sweep, the rest is pretty much completely different:

Nice!! But the engine nozzles makes me bit wonder, as the plane should propaply be powered by turbofans (I'm thinking perhaps WS-9 as they are similar size as the WP-13) should the exhaust nozzles be bit more modern looking? The orginal MiG-19-style is bit...50's...

Anyway I think we should make this thread a dedicated "what if" chinese aviation projects...just for fun and to enjoy, so if any of you have any additional "suggestions", feel free to post them. I will try to give my own effort as soon i found some time...

Inpressive drawings. I think its inevitable that they'll build an upgrade of the J-8 like the 4th generation fighter pretty soon. They'll probably add double delta wings, enhanced engines and a bubble canopy like they did with the J-7E/G. And it'll probably have advanced AMRAAMs and air to ground precision capability to some extent. Whether they will build a 5th generation finback is questionable, although it could be an outline for the J-12 design. Personally I think this aircraft may be mostly phased out by 2020, unless they are able to build a reliable fourth generation version as they did with the J-7. But it will probaly only play a role as a local interceptor - a suppourt fighter, while the J-10, Flankers and J-12 take the front-line role.

Well... this is a robbot rather than an aircraft, however... nice imagine :rofl: .

Beside the nozzle of the design of planeman, I think we should also change the tail wings. The high angle swept back tail wings don't look nice. Consider using the tail wings of FC-1 instead. Anyway, do you enlarge the aircraft?

Well here's mine suggestion:

In the late Seventies when PLAAF and PLAN where looking for new strike aircraft, Xian which eventually won the competition made aprosal to fullfill the demand of modern long range airdefence fighter by using the JH-7 as a basic platform. Ofspring was J-11. It's almoust identical to JH-7 in overall size, only the front section is changed. A new radar, based on secretly aquired AGW-9 radars from Iran in change of J-7s and J-6s. Antoher difference to the orginal JH-7 is that the aircraft is singleseated. It's powered by two WS-9 turbofans and had maxium speed of mach 2.1. Armament consisted two PL-5 in wingtips and four PL-4 in two hardpoints under each wings. The pre-production series didn't have inbuild cannon but the planned production series would incorporated a twin 23mm cannon as well as semi-blened missile launching rails in the hull. The programme suffered many shortcommings and the underpowered WS-9s where the main reason why the program was eventually cancelled and not selected by the PLAAF. The joint Chengdu/Hongdu J-13 was selected instead (which is another story and i will try to invent it as soon as possiple )

this is the Japanese upgrade ?

wow...this j-8 modification looks alot like a mig-31. Practically speaking though, this will probably never exist in real life. With the introduction of more modern fighters, why is such a plane nessecary anyways? The j-8H/F is mroe than adequate to serve the role of interceptor. This is however, a very viable export project.
