If J-20 can run off ws-10s I don't see why J-XY can't

You will have to run it off from a single WS-10 or better yet WS-15. However this means you have to redesign the air frame which can add years to the development. The result makes it more F-35ish.

Having the same engine commonality would be however, great in the long run when it comes to logistics as you would be standardizing on the WS-10/15 engine family and the established support infrastructure around the WS-10.

If I were PLAN admiral I would have ordered development of such a variant long ago.

I do think there's a non-insignificant chance that the PLAAF (not PLANAF) may be passing on the FC-31 derived design. Perhaps with a single engine, WS15 equipped plane design in its sights for the future, to start replacing the J-10s from the year 2030 (or so) onward.

Merely basing my assessment of a 2021 maiden flight from what PLA watchers have been saying. To quote @Bltizo

Also based on @Deino tweets:

I don't think the PLAN completely throws the J-15 off the 003's air wing anyway, we'd probably see them mix it up like the USN currently does with their Super Hornets and F-35Cs. If I had to guess, the air wing would probably be composed of a single seat J-15 squadron (or whatever the PLAN nomenclature is), a two-seat J-15 squadron, a J-XY squadron, and a squadron (3-5 planes) of J-15Ds for EW. Anyways getting a bit off topic, but just to illustrate that we'd most likely see a mix of J-15s and J-XYs to answer the 003 strike fighter needs.

Don’t get your hopes up too high. It has been tease but no strip for almost a decade.

But at least some day it must be unveiled... or am I wrong? I don't think that all these rumours, reports and hints towards the J-35 and its alleged maiden flight are wrong. At least I hope not.
