Wasn’t there a post some time ago from Shenyang saying a new gen (5th gen) fighter’s maiden flight is planned in 2021? Shenyang designed J-15 and FC-31, it is likely that the next carrier jet will be designed by them as well. If true, you probably need to wait another year to see it...
It’s this post:

Hi if possible to answer some Q by somebody with more knowledge will be appreciated
1 Is it necessary to for Chinese Navy ( now im not saying at the moment ) to have stealth for carrier operations
2 what is the first chain of island radius from the mainland & a possibility for Chinese airforce to back & forth till
the end of the chain
3 can it a be a possibility because of only 3 ACC on line Navy is not feeling much vulnerable to defend their shores
at the moment because of less ACC to petrol around the world and going much deeper outside their area so often
as my thoughts are that’s why J31 or Jxx is not coming online before overcoming its deficiencies
4 what is the possibility of detecting F35 from the mainland or the island of chains with radar detections
if it’s possible for someone to answer
thank you
1) Obviously it's necessary. If Side X has stealth and the Side Y doesn't, Side Y's carriers are going to be sunk pretty quickly.

2)

The First Island Chain is in range of mainland aircraft.

3) I think that the J-XY has some problems or deficiencies that are slowing the progress. From my understanding, they weren't satisfied with the J-15, so there are a lot of issues that need to be worked out. The shores are vulnerable, but you need time to overcome those problems.

4) The only way to know is in a war. :) The Chinese say they can detect it with their systems, particularly the S-400. The Americans say that the F-35 is invisible.

My intuition is that the F-35 is still very difficult for the Chinese to detect.

I posted this in the FC-31 thread but it's probably more suitable here:

"Certain R&D group dedicated to development of a new fighter was able to successfully resume work safely and scientifically during the middle of the pandmic, therefore ensuring the first flight of new generation fighter will proceed as planned in 2021."

Paraphrasing:
  • The land-based and carrier-based versions are developed in parallel; neither is developed from the other. The FC-31 was designed from the onset with potential land-based and carrier-based options in mind.
  • Prior to funding, there was only enough $$$ for the land-based version. Both the land-based and carrier-based variants have been optimized so as to maximize commonality and structural similarity.
  • Official media (not sure what he's referencing) has reported that the carrier-based version is being constructed. It only took two years to go from a blueprint to a static + flying prototype, so it's still quite a squeeze.
  • The funding has been given and the official designation was set 2 years ago. Therefore, the prediction that it will fly in 2021 is not unreasonable, according to time calculations. What will be its serial number? 3501? 35001?
Corrections to my translation are always appreciated.

So the J-35 program is jointly funded by both the PLA-AF and PLA-N?

I heard the story was FC-31 project was almost canned, but was saved by the dramatic success of WS-19 engine which convinced whoever is in charge to continue to fund the project towards 3.0 with this new engine.

I read that the WS-19 will power JF-17 as well, is that true?

So China will have 2 class of new engines:
WS-15 - top of the line engine for J20
WS-19 - slightly weaker engine for FC-31 and JF-17

Will any other fighters use these engines? Like J10, J16 etc
