"A scale-down model of J-21 was unveiled by the 601 Institute at the first International UAV Innovation Grand Prix held in Beijing in September 2011. It was first rumored in April 2011 that 601/SAC are developing a 4th generation medium multi-role stealth fighter as J-21 which would complement the heavier J-20 (see above). The aircraft has a conventional design featuring twin engines and DSIs similar to both American F-22 and F-35. The prototype could initially be powered by the 8.5t class WS-13A turbofan but later by the new 9.5t class "medium thrust" engine (WS-13B/Tianshan?). However due to its relatively small size and lower engine thrust compared to J-20, J-21 might suffer from either a limited internal payload or a shorter combat radius. A full-scale metal model was probably built in early 2011. The first prototype has been under construction since late 2011. First flight was projected to be in September 2012. J-21 (dubbed AMF/Advanced Multi-role Fighter/FC-2?) is expected to be promoted at the international market as a low-cost alternative to American F-35.

huitong is the first to come forward with the medium J-21 proposition, those who are more intimate with the Chinese BBS might be able to tell you where the rumors came from

Refer to the lfanker thread. It is there most of the discussion recarding this rumored type is taking place. In summary, we still only have rumors, but it seems a lot of watchers are expecting this to come out into the light very soon.

Alternative to F-35 eh? Makes me wonder if this "export" is limited to non-Blue states or open to most? Good-bye F-35.

NATO countries are already way too committed in the JSF program to back out now. China can sell to Thailand at best.

If I'm a NATO, I'll go screw F-35 and get myself one of these provided sufficient stats show this plane is better, economical, and fits the needs of my military, which I think has a very high potential

JSF was chosen as the next fighter by several NATO countries when little was known about the project, except that is was bound to be excessively difficult because of the wrong structuring ( three very different versions that would lead to compromises damaging to all three versions ) because their militaries and the governments thought it necessary to prove there allegiance to the US.

Quite right. It was very fun to watch how the different parties (some expressly anti-US) in Norway taking a stance in the new generation fighter program. As expected, after all arguments had been used by the government, they ended up with "when all is said an done, we need to continue to keep close military ties to the US, our main ally", and thus made it a purely political question rather than technological or military strategic.
