The whole point of the F-35 and F-22 is to replace the aging F-15 and F-16 fleets.

cept its no longer the cold war and the costs are skyrocketing, i think 3rd gen fighters will be in service for a lot longer than US had originally planned

It's not just a question of technological obsolescence. Some of these airframes are so old they're literally falling apart. That's one reason the F-35 was procured even after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The new-generation fighter that China will field in 2017-19 will be an improved J-10, the Chinese air force says, seemingly ruling out a genuine competitor to the Lockheed Martin F-22 and F-35. The statement was published in English by the People’s Daily, so it can be taken as an announcement that China wants foreigners to notice. The deputy chief of the air force, He Weirong, said on television on Nov. 9 that the country could in 8-10 years deploy a fighter of “the fourth generation,” a classification that China has previously attached to technology of the F-22 standard. But in the clarifying report, the People’s Daily cites an unnamed official as saying “. . . the fourth-generation fighters referred to the modified J-10 fighters.” Western engineers doubt a truly stealthy aircraft can be developed on the basis of the J-10. The J-10 does, however, have a configuration similar to that of the Eurofighter Typhoon, which is capable of supercruise—supersonic flight without afterburner. The navy has said it needs a supercruising aircraft but has not mentioned a requirement for stealth.

seems reasonable to me. less focus on stealth and more on supermaneuver. afterall who knows how far anti-stealth technology would progress in a decade. and China's own strategic needs and fighting doctrine prolly does not require as much of a stealth fighter as F-22/35. but i think it'd be safe to bet that the new fighter will still be considered as a "stealth" fighter by any standard, just not to the point of f-22.

I think the secondary "clarifying report" was meant to be a purposefully misleading report to play down foreign expectations of their 4th gen fighter (because what the PLAAF general originally said may have made foreign, potentially hostile countries want to acquire more, or more powerful 4th gen jets to counter china's own 4th gen fighter, i.e: Japan getting the F-22 or accelerating development of their ATD-X, US getting more F-22's for their own airforce etc) .
Also, the Chinese media also report things with lots of mistakes or inaccuracies (quite often), so I would take the PLAAF general's orignal word (of the 4S thing, and saying the 4th gen jet was made to be as close to the F-22 as possible) with far less salt than the Chinese media's inferior reporting.
We discussed the Secondary report a while ago, and I think the general concensus was that it was to be mostly dismissed. It's surprising that Aviation week is reporting the secondary report without actually considering it's provenance, reliability, likelihood of whether it's telling the truth and such. But then again I'm not sure if many media organizations do that on a regular basis...
Also, I agree with pla101prc that the 4th gen fighter may not be as stealthy as the F-22, but I'm hoping it will at least have more all aspect stealth than the F-35... Espicially if we're assuming the 4th generation jet will be built in F-22-ish numbers.
