I don't think it's technical. They wouldn't let the world know about the whole thing unless they are absolutely sure it would work. I am still wondering why people believe today is the day for flight test ...

It's more of an educated guess...you see, they flew in the big shots and some of the roads were closed - in China, that's only reserved for Vice-Premier or above. So people take it as this is "the day".

It is possible that the PLA-AF did carry out a test flight of this prototype J-20 stealth aircraft, probably to also impress the US and Defence Secretary Gates who is visiting China soon. The PLA Public Relations must have given this info to several international news media. This is a new addition to the build-up of China's military arsenal besides its Dong 21 (carrier killer) missile. Wise not to understimate China's military-technology capabilities.
