Is this real? J-10BS with WS-10?

Colour looks a bit unnatural but could be just due to poor photo quality.
Waiting for confirmation.

... That was posted in the J-10 thread, why post again in this one lol?

And personally I think it's PSed... if it were real there'd be a lot more noise.

^ I didn't notice the post in the J-10 thread, and I posted in this thread by accident thinking this was the J-10 thread.

Mods please delete the post, thanks.

latenlazy, about "scallops", what do you think about LO tapes, it is used extensively on F-22 and F-35

another tell tale (if it does exist now or later) that the J-20 is in the ballpark of F-22/F-35 LO?

I think it's probably irrelevant. How LO the J-20 will depends on the exact properties of the material in terms of signals management, and not so much the type of application it uses. It will also be a question of LO to which radars, since you can't make a plane invisible to every band range. Put it simply, we don't know. It seems that the J-20 at least will have a good baseline based on its shaping, but it's difficult to extrapolate from there, and I'm no specialist on EM.

well it is said LO is 80% about shaping, to say that the J-20 got the shaping alright means it got the 80% done

so they are hunting for the 20% now

i agree, its too early to tell from this prototype, we'll just have to wait

That's a bit of an oversimplification I think. It's better to think of shaping as the absolute lowest potential rcs, and then any deficiencies in material, finish etc as adding to that lowest point. Keep in mind though, this all happens specifically in the context of different frequency ranges.

I should have clarified to say the J-20 seems to have rather good frontal and side aspect shaping. The shaping of the tail is noticeably poorer, but well see what they do with that. I don't doubt we're going tos ee revisions to the design as testing continues.

yes its a simplification, that 20% might account for a digit or two of decibels in LO measurement, and Americans went to great lengths pursuing it

about tail aspect, redesign will depend on the new engine, how increased thrust and different control will affect flight, how TVC affect flight laws, elimination of ventral stabs(probably?)

and WS-15 cant be at the same size with AL-31/WS-10 can it?
