Now that high resolution photos is online, I am still puzzled by this same question....
Why is the body silky smooth? It doesn't seem to have any rivets, or even seams visible in the high resolution photos. Why is that?

I'm no engineer, but I'm fairly ceratin that those are stealth qualities.

I'd also asked about the very finished product look of the J-20.

Really good dark paint, and improvement on riveting and paneling. Kinda like the J-10B

I still remember that when J-10 first came out, all the rivets on the body made people think the manufacturing was inferior. Now, we don't see those thing. And people are still suspicious...

Two points of interest for me:

-What's with the flight crew's uniforms?
-Those canards can turn to some pretty extreme angles.

Regarding the engines, why do jet engine nozzles vary the diameter of their opening throughout flight?

From Wikipedia :
"For higher performance, it is necessary to use an iris nozzle. This type uses overlapping, hydraulically adjustable "petals". Although more complex than the ejector nozzle, it has significantly higher performance and smoother airflow. As such, it is employed primarily on high-performance fighters such as the F-14, F-15, F-16, though is also used in high-speed bombers such as the B-1B. Some modern iris nozzles additionally have the ability to change the angle of the thrust (see thrust vectoring)."

Quick question, does anybody remember that article from a week or so ago by Xinhua IIRC (not too sure) that was written shortly after the first pictures of the J-20 were taken where a government official was denying the existence of the J-20?

From a different board, a nice comparison compilation to go along with what Jeff Head posted earlier:

Good for you then...well there're fans of anything sci-fi-ish in Japan, I'd say it won't be long before they include J-20 in another instalment of AceCombat, my good money says it'd be in the NPC enemy side...

To date the Ace combat series has NEVER had a Chinese designed aircraft in it, not even the J-8, I doubt they'll ever start. Same with Tom Clancy's HAWX series.

Officially, prior to the J-20 first flight they admit nor deny anything, they just said it's natural that China pursue something like the J-20, on par with the world's trend. If you talk about the first time that reporter popped the question during the Ministry of Foreign Affairs daily press conference, the spokesperson just said they should ask the military spokesperson instead.

Do you have a link to this?
