Re: Ranking engine stealth for Russian T-50, F-18 E/F, French Rafale, and China's J-2

The Russian T-50 engine layout is very similar to other Sukhoi aircraft, such as Su-30 or Su-27. It is a straight air-inlet. The Russian T-50 air intake, with fully-exposed engine fan blades, pushes its RCS above the French Rafale.

Engine fan blockers still result in a non-stealthy aircraft

An engine fan blocker is not very useful. It can reduce a portion of the exposed fan blades. However, a slapped-together solution still results in a non-stealthy aircraft.

American F-18E fan blocker. Good try, but you're still not stealthy.

Roughly 90% of the French Rafale's engine compressor blades are hidden from view. This is the reason that the French Rafale receives a 1 m2 RCS when it's "clean" and not carrying any external weapons. This assessment is determined by the reputable GlobalSecurity.

China's J-20 is the new gold standard in front-profile stealth. The J-20 has both a serpentine air-duct and DSI bump to hide the engine compressor blades. Due to its older design, the F-22 lacks DSI bumps.

Let me get this straight. Just because PAK FA has exposed engine fan blades, you assume that makes PAK FA with higher RCS than Rafale (which has 1 m² RCS) ?? Uhh....Are you kidding me? So Russian made a 5th generation fighter with more than 1 m² RCS (which is inferior to a 4th generation fighter)?

And because of that, you then go on to assume China's J-20 is now "the new gold standard of front-profile stealth" ???!!!

I think you hugely underestimated the Russians.

Not to get nationalistic but I've noticed that J-20 fans tend to disparage T-50's stealth capabilities while T-50 fans tend to disparage J-20's weight and manoeuvrability.

Back on topic:

Deino: I think your picture is taken either today or yesterday. The weather in Chengdu is foggy/rainy and will remain so for the next two days.

3. 5. May – 15:30 to 16:24 (55 minutes) – first flight with landing gear up
4. 5. May – 17:50 to 18:47 PM (57 minutes)
5. 12. May – ? minutes
6. 14. May – ?? to 14:20 (? minutes)

Man, they're surely not wasting any time with that prototype. They're really testing it's ass off.

Only like a couple months after the first test flight.

The link doesn't work for me -- what's exactly on the site?

Nobody's still interested in the bluish after-burn any more? Or has everybody here taken it that the whole visible flame thing is faked, as I said?

Anyway, my story this time is: As I heard it, there are altogether seven J-20 prototype aircraft at this time, undergoing different sets of tests simultaneously. This is, of course, to shorten the test period. And we're looking at no later than 2006 when the J-20 is to be inducted.
