I built 1/72 scale aircraft and 1/350 scale ships 20 years ago.
Had the USS New Jersey (the 1980s modernized one), the USS Ticonderoga CG, the USS Spruance DD, a US Brooke class for ships, and then a bunch of aircraft. EA-6B, AV-8B, F-14D, F-15C, F-15E, F-16C, F-117, F-18D, F-22, F-111, B-1B, AC-130H, PC3 orion, E-2C Hawkeye, SH-60, AH-64, AH-1 Cobra, V-22 Osprey, Su-27, Mig-29, SU-24, SU-25, SU-22, Mig-31, Mil-24 Hind-E, K-50 Hoakum. All built and very well detailed. Even bought some aftermarket phot etched things (older back then and not as good as today) for the ships, and 1/72 scale add on weapons and parts for the aircraft.
Now I have started again. I had the USS Enterprise (Tamiya) from back then that I never build, along with a B-52, a B-2, SR-77Penetrator, E-3 Sentry, RC-135, and a KC-135...all still unbuilt.
BTW, Trumpeter, Dragon, Cyber Hobby, and Hobby Boss all now make products as good as, and in some casses better than Tamiya. They have come a long ways in the last few years and many of their models include the photo etch parts with the model which is nice.
So I started anew.
I am 30% or more complete with my 1/350 PLAN Aircraft Carrier just released by Trumpeter in 1/350 scale. Got the first commercial one sent to the US. Have the hull and flight deck together and painted with a scratch built hangar deck because it did not come with one (too bad), but no landing spots, marker lines, landing strip lines, etc. complete/painted yet. Also have the small handrailing on the lower portion of the ship, but have not completed the weapons systems there yet. Will be starting on the island this week, after which I will begin on the aircraft (J15s, KA-31s, KA-27s, Z-8s and Z-9s). I'm pretty jazzed about it and it is looking good.
I am using the Goldmedal Models 1/350 photo etch set for the Kuznetsov to spruce it up with railings, radars, and many additional details. I use Goldmetal and other photo etch part sets, or the ones that come with the models in some cases, for all of the following models I am talking about...they make a huge differnce in the finished product. Usually use Model Master paints as well along with a really nice dremel tool with all of the attachments.
I intend to build Carrier battle groups for the PLAN, US Navy, the Russians and the British.
The PLAN will be the carrier, two Type 054As when Trumpeter releases those this summer (scheduled for June), a Type 052C which I already have, a Type 052B which I already have, the PLAN 139 Ningbo Sov, a Type 093 SSN which I already have. I will add a Type 071 when Trumpeter comes out with that model. That's be a total of eight, modern PLAN vessels for that grouping.
The US Group will be based around the USS Enterprise, CV-65, which I have, the USS Ronald Reagan, CV-76, which I have, the Bunker Hill AEGIS CG which I have, the Lassen AEGIS DDG which I have, the Churchhill AEGIS DDG which I am yet to buy, a LA Class Flight III SSN which I have already completed, the USS Texas Virgina class SSN which I already have, two LCS (which I already have) outfitted for the ASW role, and the USS Iwo Jima, LHD-7 which I already have. I will add to that my existing New Jersey and the other Tico for a total of 12 US vessels in a two carrier grouping.
I am yet to buy any of the Russian models or the UK models, but a lot of them (except the new UK Queen Eleizabeth) are already out there and I will get them as time goes on. For example my UK Group will be the Illustrious, the QE, two Darings, two Firgates and an Astute SSN for a total of seven vessels. I hope to have the Chinese and the US groups finished by this fall.
I'll post threads here on SD and a whoe site on my JEFFHEAD.COM Site as I build these, talking about the builds, techniques, difficiencies in the models, work arounds, scratch builds etc.
For example, on the PLAN Carrier, it did not show or come with the FL-3000N missile system on the starboard bow sponson and the painting scheme does not show the landing strip painted in a darker gray color than the rest of the flight deck. I have asked Trumpeter to send me the parts for the additional FL-3000N missile system and to revise their paint scheme based on these two photos of the actual vessel:
