Beijing has quietly scrubbed the chief designer of China’s J-20 stealth fighter jet from its premier scientific academy, marking the latest high-profile disappearance in a widening anticorruption campaign targeting the country’s military-industrial complex.

Thanks, didn't realize this had been reported on before!
Not sure about this specific instance but there have been others where his title got stripped. Most notable one, and the first domino to fall, was that he got taken off CAC's site. Going this long after the initial sign that something was up without a formal declaration of prosecution or ejection though suggests that his offense was likely minor. We'll see but it's unlikely he's in serious trouble. For now the likely conclusion is that he's just being made an example of for disciplinary purposes.

He was spotted at a Hongdu Airshow last year.

This won’t stop the usual bottom feeders from claiming that J-20 has serious defects though. To that I’ll just list three points:

1) May 7th
2) 500 aircraft produced with two new variants and WS-15 integration well along the way.
3) participated in countless intercepts of foreign intruders (including fifth gen) and encirclement exercises around Taiwan.

It feels like Yang Wei's situation might not be looking good. He might avoid being prosecuted, but the punishment he receives probably won't be light either.

He’s nearing retirement age either way. So far it seems like he’s mostly just lost some formal positions. They’re still going to do the CCTV documentary about him in a few years and they’ll probably sidestep this part of his story.

As an academician, Yang Wei (born 1963) is still far from the mandatory retirement age of 70, so this situation is clearly not a routine retirement. In China, academician titles are only revoked in cases involving serious misconduct —a fact that speaks volumes. It is hoped that the issues surrounding him do not involve the J-20 fighter jet.

Getting your title stripped is not that serious relative to the actual consequences of serious graft. Compared to other punishments this is just a slap on the wrist. They’re just very stringent about conduct rules these days.

The J-20 is a two decade old program by now. If there were issues with it that would have been spotted long ago.

Getting title stripped is only what we can see.
