So the BMW J-20 was only for testing thrust-vectoring?

I wonder how people might spin the fighter-bomber/interceptor theory once we have proof of a J-20 variant with TVC engines. 3D TVC for short take-off/landing or RCS reduction via minimal control surface movements?

They tend to emphasize that the J-20 is less stealthy than the F-35 and F-22 these days.

"雪鸮/Snow Owl" was the program which SAC and CAC competed in for the 4th generation fighter program.

SAC's design was even larger than the J-20 and emphasised kinematic performance over stealth.

Naturally I like it, and the FC-31 appears in some sense to be a "scaled down" Snow Owl, recall that SAC builds Flankers, and the initial SU-33 had canards in addition to OVT, but I think we can probably all agree that the J-20 is far more exemplary of a 5 Generation L/O aircraft....

One positive thing about the supposed SAC design is the engines appear further in compared to the J-20. That along with the larger conventional tail should help slightly reduce the IR exposure from certain angles compared to the J-20. F-22 and F-35 uses this technique quite bit. YF-23 was the king in-terms of IR reduction. But on the flips-side, RCS singnature must have been horrible in the SAC proposal. Despite some of the critics worldwide, I think the J-20 has a good balance for PRCs needs and future iterations with WS-15 will be quite the beast.

Look at the size of that SAC design in comparison to the J-20. It might as well be fighter/bomber!

That's probably fanart. Nothing to go off on. It could easily have been a triplane design around the size of J-20. Not significantly longer as this fanart suggests.
