The J-2O is flying with the AL-31FNs, which is powerful and relatively reliable, this isn't really a consideration during prototype testing? At some point, depending on the availability of the WS-15, the J-20 team will address such operational concerns and either install the WS-15?? or possibly even the 117S? While it is a subject of conversation at present, it is not a "pressing" engineering issue at present. No doubt they have "worked" every angle and have a couple of options?

The F-22 is the first stealth fighter in the world and the only one to employ square nozzles. Subsequent designs, both American (F-35) and foreign (J-20, T-50) show no indication that the square design will ever be used. Saw-tooth traditional nozzles seem to be good enough. I can't boast to know the reason, but it is not because the square design is extremely hard to make/design. Part of the reason may be that the square design reduces engine thrust (by some 10-15% so I've heard) and are quite heavy. I don't know how much stealthier they are than round saw tooth nozzles.

I think J-20 being flown on September-18 have more to do with history as Japan started the invasion of Manchuria, Northern China on September-18-1931. ( Even though full scale invasion was in 1937) And that's why Japan’s parliament changing their constitution’s anti-war clause by passing the new legislation on the same date is coincidentally provocative to the Chinese.

And if you were to put money on it, asif iqbal, what would you say the probability is we'll see WS15s on one or more J-20 by end of 2016? High, medium, or low probability?
Medium. It SHOULD be starting high altitude testing on a flying testbed soon, if it hasn't already. Question is whether that stage takes more than a year or less than a year, and if there are any problems.
I wonder if the petals will have any distinct characteristics.
*Snort* The Chinese PLA watching community has grown quite anxious about engine petals over the years hasn't it? Pretty certain the petals would be different though, since it would be an entirely different engine. Who knows, it might not even be circular.
