A great image showing the PLANS-16 „Liaoning“ with her deck full of J-15T fighters.
However I‘m a bit surprised we still have seen a J-15T with PL-15 AAM; these are all still PL-12.

Yeah, genuinely puzzled as to why we haven't seen PL-15s. Even the Zhuhai birds only had PL-12s. It's not like the FCS of the J-15T can't support them....

(would love to see PL-17s on them too but we're not even seeing PL-15s on them lol so fat chance)

The old J-15s use a radar that's kinda a hybrid between the Type 1493 and JL-10AG's radar. Not AESA.

Interestingly, I've heard that the J-15s manufactured 2020-ish have a PESA that's described as the "peak of Chinese PESA" and is on par (if not better, which is likely) with the IRBIS-E.

The J-15Ts use (probably GaN) AESAs.

Maybe the PL-15s are carried between the engines, hence not seen in the pictures. Another aspect is that for peacetime maybe they're using the older stock of PL-12s for training and firing drills. Has the PL-15 ever been seen on a J-15?

I wouldn't be too surprised if it's just a matter of awaiting PL-15 integration with the airwing from a procedures/munition handling pov, or even for the PLANAF overall given no PLAN aircraft prior to J-15T would've had PL-15s at all.

It is just a matter of time until we see the first J-15T carrying PL-15s, imo it isn't necessarily a mystery at this stage.


OTOH if five years pass and we don't see any J-15T carrying PL-15s, then I agree that would be eyebrow raising.
