So the J-10CYs do look like they have most if not all combat subsystems retained by the looks of it, same as I speculated before. Very interesting, I wonder if there’s a a chance that these are just repainted combat-ready jets (as opposed to “dedicated aerobatics jets specifically produced for Bayi”) used for export demonstration or some other purposes?High-resolution images J-10CYs from Malaysia.
The Air Force certainly has a purpose for using these aircraft for export displays, and it’s possible that this is the model they’re using. However, I don’t believe they are repainted combat-ready planes. After all, it’s time for the August 1st Aerobatic Team to upgrade their aircraft.
In addition to aerobatic flight mission, Bayi also has the duty of combat.
This is the first time in nearly 50 years since the establishment of the Air Force August 1st aerobatics team that it has taken on combat duty tasks, marking a transformation in the combat ability generation mode of aerobatics team and achieving a leap from an aerobatics team to a combat team.
After receiving the new domestically produced J-10 fighter jet in 2009, they implemented a personnel rotation system, selecting mature pilots from the entire Air Force, and returning to the combat units after flying for two or three years in the aerobatics team.
The reporter saw from the screen of the command post that the three-dimensional icon displayed the aircraft's aerial dynamics in real-time. The commander told reporters that in order to better utilize the excellent combat performance of the fighter jet, pilots make full use of performance training gaps to conduct interceptive air combat and other course training, further improving pilots' combat skills and enhancing their collaborative ability with the commander.
Thanks to the selection and exchange approach of "selecting excellent fighters from the combat units to enrich the aerobatic team, and then sending excellent aerobatic pilots to serve in the combat units", in 2017, Shen Yuanji, who had just turned 30 years old, underwent strict selection and entered the team, opening a new chapter in his flying career.
The distinct combat practical orientation also covers the field of maintenance support. The team participated in the Moscow Air Show for the first time, and the accompanying cross-border aviation maintenance is indispensable. The maintenance mechanism of streamlining, miniaturization, comprehensiveness, and containerization plays a prominent role. Bai Wenguo, the mechanical technician accompanied the team, introduced that in the past, six or seven large transport vehicles were needed to transport maintenance equipment during a deployment mission in China. This is the first time flying abroad, the loading of maintenance equipment was reduced from 5 cabins to 2 cabins, and the number of maintenance personnel was correspondingly reduced, but the level of maintenance remained unchanged.
Today's August 1 aerobatic team has always maintained its tactical training and combat duty ability, organized aerial refueling training, improved its long-range mobility, and repeatedly undertook combat duty tasks.

"Y" variant is for 演(yan)。as in 表演。 Customized for 八一飞行表演队(bayi feixing biaoYAN dui)。
“Y” variant is customized for August First acrobatic Display team. Y stands for "Display" as in Acrobatic Display.
Why do you think it is customized for Egypt?
Perhaps it’s because I still don’t know what was added to the modified spine. Surely it can’t be a prop specifically for enhancing flight performance? I’m not saying the J-10CY is customized for Egypt, and I’m not even sure if Egypt buying the J-10C is true. However, I think Egypt’s air combat environment differs from Pakistan’s. If it wants to buy the J-10C, Chengdu will offer three models: one for the PLAAF, one for Pakistan, and one for the August 1st Aerobatics Team. If Egypt considers customization, I would focus on the J-10CY esealy. Of course, they may change another name.
Maybe I’m wrong. Perhaps the J-10CY more easily reminds Middle Easterners of the improvement of the F-16 BLOCK 52?
