J-10 Thread IV

J10's enlarged spine ver 1.0 is found on J10S or J10AS. So, J10CY's enlarged spine is actually version 2.0. The J10 designer teams must have weighted the advantages vs dis-advantages in their new spine design, helped by data gathered from operating J10S/J10AS.

I am not saying that having a bigger spine is better, but rather that it does not adversely affect the performance of the aircraft like other members think so.

Didn’t they start with AL-31FN and switch to ws-10 mid-production? I’m not quite getting this “switching back to Chinese engines”
Yes the most recent two batches of J-10Cs use WS-10, as well as those exported to Pakistan. However, the J-10D (strait back version) appears to have reverted back to AL-31FN. And the jet in this picture is ...new? If new, then it is possible that Salut could have won new contracts with Chengdu. Also, one reason why J-10Cs had to switch to WS-10 was because the allegedly degrading qualities of Salut's products. Quality control appeared to be near-non-existent in Salut. There was an incident back in late 2010s when staffs at Chengdu discovered foreign objects like human underwear inside imported AL-31FN engines.

Improved QC at Salyut wouldn't mean China buys hundreds more AL-31 series engines. These if new contracts, would be for some other reason/s. They may be older stock from years back because China bought enough AL-31, from previous decade, for backups, maintenance, parts etc. That was during the era where WS-10A production was only enough for J-11B upgrades and J-16. WS-10 production may be slowed? Maybe the new Guizhou Aircraft factory for the new J-10 production line has to use up some AL-31 remaining in stock for whatever reason? Maybe WS-10 from North East China is too far to deliver to Guizhou for a certain batch of produced J-10. Who knows.

The underwear in an engine thingo if true is probably because the factory used recycled clothing as rags. Somehow that ended up in there because a worker forgot (or didn't bother to) remove it.

Do we know if Guizhou has even been making J-10s with WS-10C?

They’ve even started putting WS-10 on J-10S. I doubt it.

nope. AL-31 contract have expired in 2020 and PLAAF didn't renew. Russian engines are now history in Chinese armed forces. AL-31 become the headache for PLAAF due to poor service life and TBO. and after WS-10, they are facing difficulties to manage two different type of machines. extra cost of maintenance

They’ve even started putting WS-10 on J-10S.

they have enough AL-31 engines in storage. so why wasting those so they decided to uses those Russian machines. J-10D variant will enter in service with domestic engines.

Shenyang aero engine institute have ramped the production of WS-10. they are producing engines way more faster than SALUT coz of pulsating assembly line. and WS-10B/WS-10C performance exceed any AL series engine.
